IIM Raipur inaugurates the fifth batch of the Post Graduate Program in Management (PGP) and the 3rd batch of the FPM program on the 26th of June 2014.
The PGP program is the flagship program of IIM Raipur. The students are admitted through a tough selection process of written test (CAT) followed by an interview. Only the crème de lacrème of the applicants are selected for the program. The current batch has 17% women. The average age of students is 24 years and have an average work experience of 14 months. Students with experience have worked with IT/ ITES, Automobile, Banking and Finance, Power and Steel and manufacturing companies.
PGP program is a two-year full-time residential program that trains the future managers and business leaders of the country. The program aims at creating managers who are oriented towards not only taking up challenges of running an Indian company but also successfully facing the competition globally. The course emphasizes on creating socially responsible managers who hold high morals and believe in an inclusive growth.
The rigorous two years of the program hones the decision making skills of the students that is necessary for them to lead the companies they work with. Over the span of two years, students go through basic courses in the first year and thereafter specialize in areas of Economics, Finance, Marketing, Human Resources/ Organizational Behavior, Information Technology and Systems, Marketing, Operations and Strategy.
IIM Raipur uses innovative methods of teaching in achieving its aim of developing such ‘managers with a difference’. Apart from classroom interactions, the students are also engaged in solving case studies, role plays, projects, management games and simulations. They are encouraged to think ‘out of the box’ and use critical thinking in decision making. The students’ hard work and participation in these activities is facilitated by capable faculty of IIM Raipur, who are themselves well published and trained. The school also extends invitation to visiting faculty from premier business schools in India and abroad. The school also facilitates interaction with successful managers from corporates, who supplement the inputs of the faculty with their rich experience. Students are also exposed to cross-cultural settings and global curriculum through a student exchange program with IIM Raipur’s partnering institutions across the world.
The Fellow Program is a full-time doctoral program in the area of management. It trains scholars to become good teachers and researchers undertaking high quality research in different areas of management like Marketing, Human Resources/ Organizational Behavior, Finance, Operations and Strategy. The program also encourages scholars to take up interdisciplinary research.
IIM Raipur aims at fostering a vibrant research culture at its campus. It aims at undertaking meaningful research of high impact that furthers management thought. Active scholars in an FPM Program help further this aim.
Though several people are involved in the profession of teaching in the area of business management, the number of trained PhD faculty members is quite low. In India, only 3 in 10 faculty member is a PhD compared to 9.2 in 10 in US. The Fellowship program shall also help create a pool of trained faculty for the country, bridging this gap.
The fellowship program is a rigorous program divided over three phases. The first phase develops the scholars’ proficiency in fundamentals of management where they are asked to undergo basic courses irrespective of their areas of specialization. The scholars are associated with a faculty mentor after this phase as interns to work on a research project. In the second phase, the scholars undertake advanced courses in their areas of specialization. On successful completion of a comprehensive exam, the scholars enter the third phase where they work on their thesis under the guidance of a thesis advisory committee.
Under the guidance of able professors and an enabling environment, IIM Raipur hopes that these scholars shall someday contribute towards creation of world class teachers and researchers.
The past batches have seen scholars with experience in both corporates and academic institutions desirous of furthering their careers in management education take part in the program. Some of the existing scholars have interest in research areas like organization resilience, green supply chains, social networking, financial modeling, etc.
The 3rd batch of FPM scholars comprises of eight students. Of these, three students would specialize in Finance and Accounting, three in Marketing and one each in economics and operations area respectively.
