Do's & Don'ts for GD

Group Discussion still remains major tool to test MBA aspirant on assessing overall communication, personality, leadership qualities so it is very important and crucial component of MBA selection process.

After the results for CATXATIIFTSNAPCMATMAT and NMAT are out, you will be invited for GD and it is must for you to practice with variety of GD topics. This article as study material on topic "Group Discussion - Do's & Don'ts” will boost your confidence to be successful in Group discussion:

After having tested you for conceptual skills in exam institutes will still like to know you as personality and your adaptability to become future Manager and that’s the reason Group Discussion is the most important tool wherein candidate is selected or rejected.

Group Discussion is the test with which it is judged whether you can function as a team member or you can be developed as a leader or not therefore how do you interact in GD batch becomes an important criteria for your selection.

Following are the skills which are being judged during Group Discussion :

• How are you communicating with others in GD batch
• Your behaviour and interactive skills
• How adaptive you are
• Listening & tolerance skills
• Your expressing views to others
• Leadership and decision making skills
• Analytical skills and subject knowledge
• Problem solving and critical thinking skill
• Your attitude and confidence.

Do’s and Dont’s at the Group discussion:

1. Keep eye contact while speaking:
Candidate must not look at the GD panelists & continuously keep eye contact with each  member of GD batch

2. Initiate the GD:
It is really good if candidate can take the initiative but it is very important to know the subject in depth failing which initiative will be lost like fluid and it will be futile and candidate may not be able to recover

3.Allow others to speak:
Candidate should not interrupt to other batch members and it at all it is required then permission request should be put in a very humble manner for your putting views and at this time additional information should be added or supplemented

4.Speak clearly:
Speak politely and clearly. Use simple and understandable words while speaking. Don’t be too aggressive if you are disagreeing with someone. Express your feelings calmly and politely

5.Make sure the GD topic is not diverted:
Should the GD batch is diverting the topic because of mediocre quality then candidate can take initiative to bring back the discussion only at the allotted topic by the GD panel and then candidate can take further initiative to stick to the topic. This will vindicate the leadership quality of the candidate

6.Positive attitude:
Be confident. Do not try to dominate anyone. Keep positive body language. Show interest in discussion

7.Speak sensibly:
Do not shout and speak just to increase your speaking time. Don’t worry even if you speak less. Your thoughts should be sensible and relevant instead of irrelevant speech

8.Listen carefully to others:
Speak less and listen more Pay attention to others.  This will make coherent discussion and you will get involved in the group positively.

9.Formal dressing:
Do not take it casually. No fancy and funny dressing. You should be comfortable while speaking in a Group
