The Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Ancient Greek, Persian, Viking, and many more played a ball game long before our era. The history of soccer is rich with events, development and its growing craze all over the world.

The history of modern day soccer was  established in October 1863 when eleven  representatives from London clubs and schools met at the Freemason Tavern, to set up a common fundamental rules to control  the football matches amongst themselves. They formed a Football Association. Soccer’s popularity spread rapidly during the 1800s. The first international football match was played in 1872 in Glasgow between Scotland and England. British sailors, traders and soldiers introduced the sport to different parts of the globe.

FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) was established in the year 1904 with the aim to host championship matches between professional leagues from different nations. FIFA is credited with organizing the first football world cup in Uruguay in 1930. The craze of football can be felt when the FIFA fever sweeps the world. In 1908 soccer came into the Olympic Games.

Soccer is the fastest growing and most popular sport in the world. Even in India Football is one of India's most popular sports, next to cricket and hockey. The origin of football in India can be traced back to mid nineteenth century when the game was introduced by British soldiers.

In 1950, FIFA and Brazilian Football Federation invited Indian football team to participate in the fourth World Cup in Brazil, but Indian team could not take part as most of its players were participated with barefoot which was against the international rule that has stated wearing shoes is mandatory. It was only 1985 that Indian football team make an attempt to any football event but they failed to get beyond the first round.

Indian national football team is ranked 157th in the world position. Lack of infrastructure is the major problem face by Indian football. This is the main obstruct for the development of beautiful game in India.  However, efforts are made by various organizations such as FIFA, AFC as well as support are coming from public and private sector. Many football clubs are formed like Mohan Bagan, East Bengal Club, JCT phagwara football club, Mahindra United Club, Mohanmedan Sporting cluband many more. Now there is a chance to transform the standard of Indian football in the country.

Here we cannot ignore the contribution to Mohun Bagan club. Mohun Bagan was the first Indian as well as Asian football team to defeat the foreign team, All-British East Yorkshire Regiment team, in 1911. Mohun Bagan was the first ever Indian team to win the Indian Football Association (IFA) shield. In honour of this historic victory, the ‘Manoshi’ magazine came up with a song on Mohan Bagan and in 1989; Government of India published a postal stamp. Winning movement of IFA Shield churned up the wrap of a football game among its lovers.  On winning movement Mohan Bagan has been announced as National Club of India. Historic victory of IFA shield raised the craze for football game in the country.

Craze and thirst for football game is always there but there is a need to take it on more serious note so that football game should not be overshadow by other games like cricket. Performance and winning games at higher level needs equal dedication from both the administration and the players. Our football team should win some International titles to draw mass interest. Country’s sports department should provide more support, infrastructure at grass root level and international exposure along with good incentives to the players. No doubt that more involvement of past footballers like Gostha pal, Subimal Chuni Goswami, Inderpal singh, P K Bannerjee, Jarnil Singh Dhillion, leads to improve the status and help to enhance the football game in India.

There is a need to think and implement following steps to raise the bar of football game:

•    Better Facilities to the player
•    Making the game popular country wide through Media and other means of communication
•    Giving chances for the youth
•    More and more Football Academy for training children and prepare them for the future
•    Strong dedication toward football

India’s highest paid footballer and also the captain of the Indian football team, Baichung Bhutia quoted that ‘life of a footballer India is very limited. He feels that India has immensely talented players, but the training standards have to be bettered.’

Foreign coaches should be appointed to coach teams. All clubs and state associations should start youth academies. It is observed that Indians don't play football in a way it has to be played. So foreign assistance especially from europe & latin america is unavoidable. More focus should be given to juniors. More tournaments are to be conducted at youth levels. India is home to many rich people so if they approached in right manner funds can be raised. Professional clubs can contribute a lot to the game. They should appoint foreign coaches assisted by Indian coaching officials.

At present Indian football team have awesome players but a there is a need to generate more interest among the views. Good sponsorship and media coverage can play a vital role to take this game at high level.

Hope one day India will come up with world championships and Indian Football will also improve and reach greater heights to challenge the power houses of Football like Brazil & Argentina.
