Understanding Self will help for Managerial Excellence

It is true that good leaders make good organizations. Top companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, Samsung and Nokia are flourishing because they are blessed with good leaders.

Under proper guidance, employees will be able to move in the right direction and align their tasks with the strategies of the company.

A good manager understands the needs of the organization and ensures that all the employees work towards meetings these needs.

This is possible when the strengths of individuals are tapped into and their weaknesses are improved upon. It is important for a company to know the strengths of an employee before he is given a task. Else, the resources of the company will not be optimized.

In order to lead a company efficiently and effectively, it is important to understand the self for managerial excellence. There are many kinds of leaders in the industry – those who are good communicators, those who care about the wellbeing of employees, those who are authoritative in nature and those who are technically strong.

To ensure that you become a good, or an excellent, manager, it is important to understand your leadership style. Some leaders are good in technical aspects and have a strong grasp of details, but they are unable to communicate their thoughts and ideas with their subordinates.

This may prove to be a challenge for managers because as a leader, you are required to interact well with your colleagues. Only by delegating work to your subordinates will you be able to complete projects successfully and on time.

So, by carrying out an in depth analysis of yourself and your leadership style, you will be able to identify your strengths and weaknesses. Accordingly, you can develop upon them and enhance your leadership capabilities.

Wipro, one of the leading companies in India and beyond, has come up with the ‘Leadership Development’ initiative to sharpen and enhance the leadership skills of its employees.

Under this initiative, there are five programs – entry level program, new leaders program, Wipro leaders program, business leaders program and the strategic leaders program. In the entry level program, a new employee is trained to become an effective team member.

He is taught proper communication skills, given cross-cultural training and given the opportunity to work with diverse groups of people. In the new leaders program, first time managers are taught to build teams and lead and coach employees.

Here, budding managers become aware of their weaknesses and strengths and training is provided so that they can enhance their capabilities. As new managers gain more experience, they are given the opportunity to lead teams in other countries.

In an organization, you need all kinds of leaders. You need leaders who are firm, caring, good communicators and good in technical details. Firm leaders ensure that all the work is done on time, whereas caring leaders ensure that an employee has no qualms.

Leaders who are caring believe that ‘a happy worker is a good worker,’ which is why they try to keep subordinates happy by giving them incentives so that their productivity levels remains high. However, a caring leader should understand that he needs to work on his firm attitude so that people do not take advantage of his kindness.

Just like how the personalities of employees differ, the personalities of leaders also differ in the same way. Only by understanding your leadership style and your strengths will you be able to gain managerial excellence.
