The foundation stone of the country’s eleventh IIM was laid on 4th January 2011 by the then Hon. Minister of Human Resource, Mr. Kapil Sibal. The first batch of IIM- Tiruchirappalli or IIM-Trichy with an intake of 88 students started functioning from June 2011 under the mentorship of IIM- Bangalore.
The former SEBI Chairman M. Damodaran heads the board of governors and IIM-C faculty Prof. Prafulla.Y.Agnihotri has been appointed as director of IIM-Trichy.
IIM-Trichy is temporarily functioning from National Institute of Technology (NIT) campus which is located in Thuvakudi on the Trichy-Tanjore national highway, 17 km from Trichy Railway Junction.
The students inherit all the facilities offered by NIT like access to established hostel, mess, students’ recreation facilities like, Gym, swimming pool, cricket ground, etc. Most importantly, institute offers an excellent academic environment which facilitates better learning. Fully air-conditioned class-rooms with the state of the art infrastructure are provided by the institute.
Tamil Nadu Government has allocated 172 acres of land for the permanent campus located in between Bharathidasan University and Anna University of Technology on the Trichy-Pudukottai highway,17 km south-east of the city centre and 12 km from Tiruchirapalli International Airport.
Though IIM-T has started recently along with three other new IIMs in Rohtak, Ranchi and Raipur, IIM-Trichy is the first among the four to get started with a full-time director and 12 highly qualified experienced full-time faculties chosen out of over 400 applicants from the country and abroad.
IIM-Trichy offers Two Year full-time Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) with an aim to develop young men and women into competent professional managers, capable of working in any sector of organized activity, proceeding leadership and achieving excellence in performance while contributing to the welfare of the larger society.
PGP has designed to meet following objectives :
Equip students with the required conceptual and interpersonal skills and sense of social purpose for managerial decision-making
• Develop leadership capabilities to act as change agents and be a source of motivation in the organizations they work in
• Nurture the desire to excel in performance without compromising integrity, honesty and fairness
IIM-T has been one of the preferred B-School during the admission progress. Though the plan was to restrict the number of admissions to 60 for the first batch, the response was overwhelming and hence a total of 88 students including 73 boys and 15 girls have been enrolled for the first batch of the Post Graduate Programme (PGP).
Course fee is Rs 10 lakh for the two-year programme, which included tuition fee, course materials, basic books and case study books. The fee is reasonable as compared to other new IIMs in the country. Institute is planning to come up with more new programmes shortly and expected to introduce fellowship programmes in 2012-13.
IIM-T initial response to newbie IIM-Trichy is quite impressive. IIM-T set a target to list among the top 10 B-Schools of India in next five years.
IIM-Trichy director Prafulla Agnihotri quoted in media that IIM-Trichy has planned to introduce short-term courses addressing the needs of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Tier 2 towns and tailor made courses for any industry evincing interest in sending their executives to IIM-Trichy.
IIM -T’s vision is to “Prepare young minds to contribute to the betterment of the global society”. Thus institute aims at preparing students for global leadership roles emerging from India in the decades to come. IIM-T also believes that students should act as change agents with socially responsive behavior. For these reasons, institute has outlined special weightages for parameters like communication ability and personality, managerial and leadership attributes, and social awareness and disposition, in its selection process. It places a special emphasis on “social competence” of the student in its selection.
IIM-T aims at “creating an environment that encourages students having diverse backgrounds to achieve excellence in the field of their choice, thru holistic, functional and relevant education.
IIM- Trichy has adopted a philosophy of “experiential learning” where students will be encouraged to learn through field work, projects and live assignments in the industry along with case-based methodology.
IIM- T making an effort to partner with industry for providing support by training and consulting activities and soon institute will start Guest lectures and seminar where industry’s key executives and top management will interact to the students to share their practical experiences.
IIM-Trichy is among those institutes who have replaced GD with WAT (written analysis test) in their selection process. Rest admission process is same as adopted by other IIMs.
“Integrity” and “ethical behavior” are the foundations of IIM-T. An attempt has been made to assess these qualities in candidates during the Written Analysis Test (WAT) and Personal Interviews (PI).
On the basis of the philosophy of IIM- Tiruchirappalli, students’ selection criteria would be Personal Interview & Written Analysis Test.
Tiruchirappalli is a great, historical city known for its rich heritage and has a legacy of providing quality education. IIM- Trichy plans to undertake and make available facilities for research in all branches of knowledge and management education. IIM-T has inculcated a practice of “data based decision making” and a “spirit of collaboration” among students that make them enable to work jointly and lead a global team of managers.
