Team MBA Rendezvous met Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria, Vice Chairman at Jaipuria Institute of Management to discuss a plethora of relevant issues concerning management students. Here is an excerpt:

Team MBA Rendezvous - How would you see the role of Management schools in the VUCA world? Would it be enough to be an MBA in this VUCA world?

Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria - The most important thing for management institutes is to keep up with the skills of the 21st century, and continuous learning throughout the career is the most crucial facet. At Jaipuria, we train managers to inculcate the ability to learn continuously on the job. We put a lot of stress on changing and evolving the pedagogy in and outside the classroom. We call ourselves the ‘BE’ school, which essentially means that it is not enough to just learn but in order to succeed, you need to inculcate the values that will help you in the future.

We are redesigning the course to make it more learner centric. It is our conscious effort to take a lot of the learning outside the classroom, and include live projects as part of the course. We encourage students to discuss and debate issues, be actively involved in the learning process rather than being passive learners.

Team MBA Rendezvous - Overall employability scenario in the country is getting murkier & gloomy. So what can be the future course of re-activation?

Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria - I think it is not right to say that the employment scenario in the country is bad. There is a gap between the talent that is required and the talent that is available. Most companies are looking for talent at various places but are unable to find the right talent for their company. It is important for MBA institutes and graduates to work together and inculcate the skills that are necessary in today’s work environment. I am very positive about the employability prospects of students who have the right skills.

Team MBA Rendezvous - What is it that the Industry can expect from an MBA pass-out?

Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria - MBA pass outs should endeavour to become quick learners and good communicators. The world of business is changing rapidly. It is important to adapt to the needs of the changing scenario. An MBA graduate should also be a good communicator because in today’s world, whether with colleagues, superiors and customers, no amount of change will get rid of the human contact, rather human contact is being enhanced.

Team MBA Rendezvous - If future depends on present, then how would you like to create social behavioural skills which the Industry is demanding?

Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria - In today’s world, people to people contact is paramount. It is important for students to learn to be a part of teams, where they respect the goals of their teams and organisations over and above theirs. By doing this, they would meet not only their team and organisation’s goals but also their individual goals.

Team MBA Rendezvous - How does ranking of Institutes affect students?

Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria - There has been a proliferation of the ranking industry. Students should look at the methodology of rankings and to what extent ranking survey is actually drilling down into the details of an institution and cross checking the information. I am happy to say that there are a few rankings, including the government NIRF ranking, which are doing that. Students should be careful about which ranking they would like to follow and view as an indicator to how an institute is doing but, definitely, they should crosscheck with their seniors and form an opinion accordingly. Rankings do affect students but they should always cross check the rankings before making a decision.

Team MBA Rendezvous - Who will be your ideal MBA aspirant to join Jaipuria Institute of Management?

Mr. Shreevats Jaipuria - At Jaipuria, we have had many management aspirants and people who have had great success. The main quality connecting all of them is the ability to learn continuously throughout their lives. And the ideal MBA aspirant to join Jaipuria will be one who possesses this ability.
