No. 1: Hello friends. Good morning. Today we have been given a very practical topic to discuss. Hope this GD will help us present our very self in front of these esteemed observers. Well I think GD itself is all about knowledge and not text book. Group discussion is a way by which the B-school panel measures quality of candidate on parameters like Content & Knowledge, Rational thought process, Communication skills, Group Behavior and Leadership Skills. While the written exam tests the quantitative, reasoning and verbal skills of an applicant that is not all that a future manager is expected to excel in. In fact, that is just the start! A successful manager should not just be good with his quota of work, but he/ she is expected to contribute as part of a team. Ability to work, and contribute in teams is an absolute must to succeed in corporate sector. And that’s what Group Discussions aim to test. Thus, to succeed in GD itself we need to be prepared with some skillful and practical knowledge instead of bookish theories.
No. 2: Hello friends, I somewhat agree with No. 1. I believe that learning should not aim at any one motive; whether it is mugging bookish theories or clearing the GD. Rather we should try and learn something new every day. Most of us have one or two areas of knowledge that we strive to know very well like things related to our course or a hobby or two. But while it’s important to develop a deep understanding of the things that matter most to us, it is just as important to develop a broad understanding of the world in general. There are a lot of good, practical reasons to make learning something new a part of our daily routine, as we are learning creatures, and the lifelong practice of learning is what make us humans and our lives worthwhile. Learning across a wide range of subjects gives us a range of perspectives and it helps us in adapting to new situations more easily and readily.
No.1: Also a broad knowledge of unfamiliar situations feeds innovation by inspiring us to think creatively. Learning not only deepens our character and makes us more inspiring but it also makes us more confident. It instills an understanding of the historical, social, and natural processes that impact and limit our lives. And, like my friend NO. 2 here said there’s the whole “making life worth living” thing. There is, after all, a reason the term “well-read” is a compliment.
No. 3: Good Morning friends. The topic given could not only mean that books are not teaching us, rather we should learn from different sources. I think we should use the internet, talk to someone we know, sometimes even talk to a stranger, pay attention during your classes or lectures or trainings, watch educational television and giving time to ourselves to think and learn who we are could also be a great way to learn something new.
No. 4: Hi Friends, I do agree with my friends here but what I truly believe is that we should move from knowledge to action, as without implementing our knowledge we just waste it. And if I share my personal view here, I feel we generally don’t make much of our knowledge. For e.g. we are well aware of the health injuries that are caused by alcohol and tobacco but we don’t practice the teaching we are provided by the Government and different NGO’s. So it is utmost important and necessary to bridge this knowledge-to-action gap. We should also remember that one size does not fit all and that is why we need to apply what is necessary. If someone understands from book, he/she should continue going through them else my No. 3 friend here has suggested some very good measures that we can follow.
No. 3: Thank you dear friend, but I truly believe that there is a lot of difference between knowledge and learning. Knowledge is the basic building block for a successful life….What is to be criticized is an education system which has relegated the importance of knowledge in favor of ill-defined learning skills. I feel what is important here is to formulate knowledge in learning – Do not learn if you do not understand and learn before you memorize it. Building upon the basics as per your understanding, to personalize understanding and providing examples as per your experience is also a good way of practical understanding.
No. 5: Hello Friends, here I would like to add one more point which is very important for me. When it comes to learning or understanding or knowledge, whatever we call it, the basic requirement of almost all educated people as well as mine, remain same, i.e., to have a career and to get a job. A job that is very relevant to my education and to which I am suitable. In short I am talking about Employability. It refers to a person's capability for gaining and maintaining employment. For individuals, employability depends on the knowledge, skills and abilities they possess and the way they present those assets to employers. Employability, though, is a big issue in our country. For e.g. in April 2007, Nasscom had a study and came out with a report that only 25 % IT graduates are readily employable, which is too low considered to the developed countries as the talent pool in developed countries is much smaller, and the quality of education there is much higher, unlike our country. Although, our Government is working towards this issue and has came out with few good solutions. The right to education bill being one of the finest steps taken towards the goal. But, the bill has just been passed in India, and it will take time for it to show results.
No. 2: Dear friends, I think we have had a very enlightening discussion here but it’s time we should conclude. And as a concluding remark, I would like to incorporate the main points that we discussed over here of giving priority to knowledge over mere reading and to implement that wherever necessary. Also, we should analyze our own self as well as the surrounding for real and practical learning. With this I would conclude this GD and would request my team members to add their views if I have missed on anything, Thank you.
