A name to reckon with in the automobile industry, Mr. Anand Mahindra is the Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra, India largest automobile company. Mahindra has single handedly elevated the Mahindra Group from a mere jeep and truck producing firm to a multi-national entity with Utility Vehicles (UVs), Multi Utility Vehicles (MUVs) and Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs). He was also a co-promoter of Kotak Mahindra Finance Ltd, which became one of the leading private sector banks in 2003. The net worth of his flagship company M&M presently stands at USD 11.1 billion.
Born on 1st May, 1955 in Mumbai, India into a well-known business family Anand showed keen interest in his grandfather KC. Mahindra’s business and subsequently joined it. He finished his graduation from Harvard College, Massachusetts and was an active member of the Phoenix S.K Club.
He earned a degree in MBA from Harvard Business School, Boston, Massachusetts in 1981. Prior to earning his MBA, Anand was a film major at Harvard University. In 1981, he returned to India and joined the Mahindra Ugine Steel Company as Executive assistant.
Gradually in 1989, he paved his way to the post of the President and Deputy Managing Director, and diversified the company into new business areas of real estate development and hospitality. His efforts paid off, when he was appointed the post of Deputy Managing director of M&M in 1991 and Managing Director in 1997. In 2003 he took on the additional responsibility of Vice Chairman.
Under his able guidance and leadership, the Mahindra group set international benchmarks for success and became an efficient and aggressive competitor in the new liberalized economy. A rapid growth was witnessed in terms of acquisitions, as well as Greenfield business development with several high profile brands, including: Satyam Computer Services (2009); Reva Electric Motors (2010); Ssangyong Motor Company (2010) and Scorpio (2002).
The launch of Scorpio, an SUV, was a major boost to the group in 2002 but the stock prices dwindled in the market. With his sheer belief Anand played his cards well in the dicey gamble and emerged as a winner. Scorpio made positive impressions on the company's growth and came out as a well judged risk. He also launched its highly appreciated UV Bolero. M&M’s Automotive Sector makes a wide range of vehicles including MUVs, LCVs and three wheelers. M&M is the largest manufacturer of MUVs, offering over 20 models. The company is presently a market leader in the UV segment and its share is a darling of long-term investors.
The company has recently shifted its focus on developing components and offering engineering services. It has also made strategic acquisitions of plants in China and the United Kingdom and has three assembly plants in the USA. It has partnerships with international companies like Renault SA, France, Nissan and International Truck and Engine Corporation, USA.
Over the years M&M has evolved itself as a conglomeration of many companies, united with a common purpose. The company enjoys a superior position in various key industries such as utility vehicles, information technology, tractors, and vacation ownership. Its growing presence can be felt in real estate development, aerospace, retail, defense, energy, financial services, logistics and many more.
Mahindra has many awards to his credit. He was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi award in 2004 for his outstanding contribution to field of business. The Economic Times awarded him the Business Leader award for the year 2008-09. He won the Most Inspiring corporate leader of the year 2007 by NDTV Profit.

In real life Mahindra is an active participant in co-curricular activities. A tennis buff he has now taken up sailing. He enjoys world cinema, reading and listening to the Blues. In 2011 he helped to set up an annual Mahindra Blues Festival in Mumbai.
On charity front he gave USD 10 million to Harvard's humanities center, in the name of his mother. This is amongst the largest gifts received by the university, so far. He takes a keen interest in education, and apart from being a Trustee of the K.C. Mahindra Education Trust, which provides scholarships to students, he is also on the Board of Governors of the Mahindra United World College of India.
He initiated the Nanhi Kali program in 1996 to provide free education to economically underprivileged girl children in India. He is also a Life Trustee on the Board of the Naandi Foundation, a leader in providing academic support and daily meals to more than 1.3 million children in government schools as well as providing agriculture and natural resource management knowledge to small farmers across India.
A regular on Twitter he frequently shares his business ideas and views, through writing in some of India's leading business magazines. His ambitions are drawn from Jack Welch's dictum at General Electric i.e. to be either number one or number two in whatever business he is in. Under his stewardship M&M has grown into one of the nation's leading companies, employing more than 117,000 people with its presence in over 100 countries.Yet as it moves into the 21st century, it gives assurance to rise and only get better with the passage of time.
