Part-Time MBA

Why Part-Time MBA?

Management education in India is becoming more and more popular in recent years. Nowadays being an MBA is regarded as an added advantage. Any qualification coupled with an MBA degree enhances one's job perspectives. Today's young professionals consider MBA as a stepping stone in their career.

The Global Scenario

The economy has changed all the social and economic scenario of the world. It's an era of multi-nationals. MNC’s are coming and picking up the best possible talent to run their businesses smoothly. Students of new generation want to use it to its fullest, to be a part of this, to understand the business better. MBA is the easiest way for them. Not only younger generation but experienced and mid-career professionals are also opting for MBA just to give a kick to their existing career.

But is it reasonable to put your existing career on hold and go for a full-time MBA? Is it worthwhile?

If you are ready to take a risk, you could certainly go for a full-time MBA, but if you are not, and still imagining yourself as a budding corporate professional, part-time MBA is the right choice for you.

Through part-time MBA, one can expand his/her knowledge base. Part-time MBA can also present one with new opportunities along with existing career.

Demand for Skilled Professionals

Part-time courses are prevalent in foreign countries and are now in great demand in India as well. These courses are equipped with both classroom and online training. As various institutes offering part-time MBA in India are well aware of the problem faced by professionals in managing both work life and study, they provide the flexibility of attending classes on the alternate days.

Therefore, if you are a working professional and already have substantial work experience [more than 6 years] in the industry and also plan to stick to the same industry for a long time, go for a part-time MBA.

Advantages of Part-Time MBA

Part-time MBA programs were specifically designed for those working professionals who need to work and study at the same time. Some of the advantages of part-time MBA are :

  • Classes are scheduled in the evening mostly, so one can study and work simultaneously. It does not interrupt the routine of normal working life and gives an opportunity to avail a new qualification with the existing job.
  • New skills can be developed without interrupting existing job. You can enhance and update your present knowledge base.
  • Students have an opportunity to incorporate real-life situations and problems into the classroom where immediate solutions to these problems could be explored.

Disadvantages of Part-Time MBA

  • Part-time MBA programs usually take two to three years to complete, but may take up to five. For such a long period, tuition assistance may not be available.
  • Only some selected schools offer part-time MBA programs. Your choice is limited. You may be required to attend a school that is not your first choice.
  • While doing part-time MBA one has to be under tremendous pressure. Because in the morning, you are working, and attending classes in the evening. It will create double stress.

Part-Time MBA in India

Part-time MBA is a very good option for working professionals as it demands lesser time and is very cost effective than a regular MBA. One needs to find out the best-suited Part-time MBA institutes and colleges offering part-time MBA courses, programs and evening MBA in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chandigarh and other states and cities of India.

The Foremost Benefit of Part-Time MBA

A part-time MBA can offer you a number of benefits. The foremost benefit is students can work and study simultaneously since the classes for such programs take place after office hours, on weekends like Saturdays and Sundays, and even on other holidays. The majority of working executives who have already good amounts of work experience and settled on a job generally go for a part-time MBA in India.

Students have also the liberty to fix the date of their exams. The part-time MBA programs offered by various institutions include specialization in human resource development management, business studies, financial management, marketing management, healthcare administration, etc. The list of Indian institutes and universities offering part-time MBA includes the Indian Institute of Management in Kolkata, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai, Loyola Institute of Business Administration in Chennai, Symbiosis Institute of Management in Pune, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in Delhi and many more.

But at the same time, make sure that you enroll in an 'A' grade college as the part-time MBA is not seen in the same light as full time, but a good college/brand name will suffice for that. And the reality is that it's almost impossible to shift career 180 degrees using your part-time degree.

Criteria for Selection of Institute

Before selecting any institute for your part-time MBA, you should consider the following points :

  • Brand Name : Try to select a school with a high reputation in the industry. These institutes have structured syllabus and provide accurate education. Moreover, their name can add weightage to your resume.
  • Credibility : Select a course in which admission is granted to only eligible and qualified students, which means there should be some criterion for selection. Don't go for a course in which everybody who applies gets admitted. This will decrease the credibility of the course and harm you in the long run.
  • Location : Check out for the location of the institute you wish to join. It should be within your easy reach so that you can attend classes easily after a hectic day's work.
  • Timings : Timings of the classes should suit you. Whether classes are in the evening or on weekends, you should be able to attend them without being late, and on a regular basis.
  • Expenses : Before selecting any institute, think about your budget. Gather all required information related to the course, like total course fees, fees per semester and other expenses. Spend your hard-earned money wisely. Evaluate each and every point carefully and then take a decision.
  • Eligibility Criteria : See the eligibility criteria of the institute to check whether it suits you or not. Eligibility criteria for most of the institutes are graduation with 2-3 years of work experience.
  • Admission Process : Admission process of the institute should neither be too complicated nor too simple. Admission procedure in most of the institutes includes a Common Written Test (CWT) followed by Group Discussion and Interview. Applicants who qualify the CWT are called for GD & Interview. On the basis of these three, final selections are made.

Part-Time or Full-time MBA: A Study

  • If you are a fresher or have work experience of less than 2 years, then you should go for a full-time MBA. Also, if you are looking for a career shift [say from IT coding to sales/marketing], Part-Time MBA is not the right choice to make.
  • After staying in the industry for 4+ years, doing a full-time MBA/and a career shift, will most probably erode all your previous work experience benefits. And of course, you will be considered to be a fresher in that new industry even after having an experience of 4 + years in the Corporate/Professional world.
  • Therefore, a fresher with 2 or less years of experience and who is ready to go into any available and booming sector should go for a Full-Time MBA course while an experienced professional with 4 or more years of experience and who is not much eager to change his/her work field, rather considering an MBA degree only to enhance his/her skills, should go for a Part-Time MBA Course. This is not any rule of thumb but only a trend that has reaped positive rewards for many students and working professionals.

Things to be kept in mind while selecting a part-time MBA program?

Keep in mind the following points if you are attending a part-time MBA program:

  • Maximize your learning - Learn ways to implement the classroom studies in your workplace. For e.g. if you are attending a marketing course, make sure that you speak to marketing folks in your company [even if they you hate them] and get their insights. The real value of a part-time MBA lies in implementation and not the theoretical part.
  • Network, network, and network - Most of the part-time courses are attended by executives and chances are that they will bring a very rich experience to the classroom. Use that experience of theirs'. Network with them as much as possible. Build relationships with these guys. They can provide you the springboard you have been looking for.
