All MBA Aspirants must note that Quant is a must to crack CAT, XAT, MAT, IBSAT, NMAT, IIFT and CMAT Exams. Hence, it is essential for you to understand in depth Quantitative Aptitude skills and adapt them also.
The fear of Mathematics, ingrained in most of us since elementary school, continues to scare us even when we prepare for our MBA entrance examinations. The Quant section poses problem particularly for candidates not well versed with the subject and they end up making a mess of it. The curriculum includes Algebra, Mensuration, Geometry, LCM and HCF, Ration and Proportion, Percentages, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, Speed, Time and Distance, Averages, Interest, Venn diagrams, Linear Equations, Complex numbers. A total of 34 questions need to be attempted under the sectional limit of 60 minutes in CAT, which means you need to be very quick and precise. Here are 5 tips to help you improve in Quant.
1. Conceptual Clarity
Just as Mathematics is about doing the concepts correctly, the Quantitative Aptitude can only be mastered if you have mastered your concepts. Concepts refer to the logic behind solving a problem. Those students who work their way through the basics of the subject are more adept at solving the problems quickly. The mathematical tables, the terms and formulae involved and understanding the types of questions all form the basics and each candidates should be thorough with them. Also, the range of questions is so varied that it is not possible to practice all of them. Therefore, conceptual clarity is a must.
2. Plan systematically
Because the entrance examination involves more than just Quant, candidates need to plan their schedules systematically and strategically. For those, who are good in this subject and feel confident, they can take out time from this and devote to other subjects they may be weak in. But for those who are not sure about Quant, they need to allot few hours or days to each topic and also find time to work on the other subjects. Time is also a factor in the exam, hence, all preparations need to be geared towards solving the question paper in time.
3. Revise and attempt Mock Tests
Attempting Mock series and constant revision should be a part of each candidate’s strategy. Mock tests give a good idea to the candidates about the section they need to work on and also the time duration they need to finish a section in. Taking sectional mock tests will definitely help you in gaining confidence in Quant.
4. Strengthen the Weak Areas
It is important for you to segregate the topics you know and are sure about from the ones you are not sure about. By doing this, you will actually realise that there are only a handful of topics you are not confident about. This will help you to relax and reduce your anxiety levels too.
5. Be confident
For doing Quantitative Aptitude, you need to build confidence in yourself. If your basics are in place, if you have conceptual clarity and have practiced enough, there is no reason for you to undermine your performance through low confidence. Quant works well for people who are confident and possess self- belief.
Ultimately, each student needs to develop a strategy to work out Quant, after taking into account his/ her individual ability in this subject.
