The Tata Institute of Social Sciences National Entrance Test, TISSNET, contains three major components: General Knowledge, Verbal Ability and Mathematics and Logical Reasoning. Out of these three, the General Knowledge section contains the maximum number of questions (40 questions), underlining its significance. Candidates need to brush up their General Awareness to crack this entrance exam.
What is General Knowledge?
All entrance exams invariably contain questions on general knowledge in one form or the other to gauge how aware a candidate is about his/her surroundings. General Knowledge is a vast area that includes everything that has happened in the world so far, as also everything that is happening at the moment. It is not restricted to any particular area or subject or region. Other sections such as Maths, Logical Reasoning or Verbal Ability can be mastered with practice but it becomes difficult to expand your awareness level about the world if you don’t cultivate a habit for it, or put an effort in finding more about everything you come across. An inquisitive bent of mind needs to be developed to reach a decent level of awareness.

Importance of GK in TISSNET
The General Knowledge section in TISSNET is crucial for the candidates to crack the exam. Their score in GK makes or break their chances in the entrance examination.
- More weightage GK in TISSNET has been given more weightage than the other two sections. 40% of the total questions are asked from this section. So, a good score in GK can boost a candidate’s scores.
- Saves Time The GK section in TISSNET saves a lot of time of the candidates. This is because the candidates either know the answer to the given questions or they don’t (they can even make a considered guess). The questions, hence, can be solved within seconds and the time saved can be allotted to other sections.
- Accuracy Candidates can achieve a high level of accuracy in the GK section and increase their scores. This is because there is minimal chance of a candidate being confused about the answer. Even if the candidate does not know the answer, he/ she can take a guess rationally as there is no negative marking in TISSNET.
Types of Questions in GK for TISSNET
There are two types of questions a candidate may face in the GK section of TISSNET:
- Static Questions the questions that are based on established facts or events in history and remain same and unchanging. For example, Mahatma Gandhi died in 1948 is an established fact of history and shall remain so. The candidates can refer to good books or online material to just register and retain such facts and events in their minds.
- Dynamic Questions the questions that are unfolding or are susceptible to change. For example, questions of current affairs, new events unfolding in the world, new technology being launched. The candidates should consult a couple of good newspapers and news channels to keep pace with the happenings around the world.
Thus, GK for TISSNET poses a considerable challenge to the candidates. The section may prove to be difficult for the candidates, as one can’t be sure of what to expect in this section.
