Resume is a written compilation of your education, work experience, credentials and accomplishments and is used to apply for jobs. Another name for a resume is c.v. In simple words we can describe resume word as a document used by individuals to present their background and skill sets to secure a new employment.

Employers and recruiters review hundreds of resumes every day. It takes a few seconds for the interviewer to screen your suitability for the role. Creative and updated resume in hand is the first step for every job seeker whether he is a fresh out of college or seeking a job change. Writing a resume that stands out from the crowd is a key success factor for job seekers. So, ensure that your resume is interesting enough at first glance. An eye-catching resume will increase your chances of getting a job interview.

Resumes may be organized in different ways:

  • Reverse chronological resume: It enumerates a candidate's job experiences in reverse chronological order, generally covering the last 5 to 10years or it can be more.
  • Functional resume: It lists work experience and skills sorted by skill area or job function.
  • Hybrid resume: It organized this way that typically leads with a functional list of job skills, followed by a chronological list of employers.
  • Online resume: Sometime Job seekers made an electronic version of their resume available to employers and professionals who use internet recruiting.

Stating a resume objective clearly on top helps to convince employers that you know what you want and are familiar with the field.

The resume objectives should be divided into two elements:

  • Career summary i.e. professional history
  • Description of the job that you are seeking

The objectives are for the employers so they can evaluate your competencies. It should be customized in such a manner so that it specifically highlights the experience you have that is relevant to the job you are applying for. The more specific your resume objective is the better chance you have of being considered for the job.

Many professional resume writers and human resources professionals believe that a resume should be long enough so that it provides a concise, adequate, and accurate description of an applicant's employment history and skills.

Resume’s length with clear cut information about skills and qualifications help the recruiter to screen your suitability for the role. Each section should be short and to the point. Basic purpose of sending resume is to let the recruiter to notice your career profile. Lengthy and precise matter of resume can increase your chance to get a good job. A very short length of resume might skip important details about your skills and talent or extensive information would leave recruiter searching for relevant information.

Information should be crisp and concise which highlights your accomplishments to employers so that they can assess your suitably for the position.

Resume length can be determined by splitting your resume into sections like:

  • Personal information
  • Education
  • Training courses
  • Computer skills
  • Employment history
  • Personal interests
  • Reference

Resume should carry right, impressive and applicable information leaps out and grabs recruiter attention.

For fresher’s resume one page C.V. with career objectives and academic qualifications should suffice. As you grow older, your employment record will take precedence. A mid- or senior level resume will have more information to include than a fresh graduate resume and thus it can be extend to two or even three pages. Job seeker with work experience in his hand has to elaborate his resume by including job responsibilities and achievements of previous employments. It should convey your personal details in such a way that presents you in the best possible light.

“Resume: a written exaggeration of only the good things a person has done in the past, as well as a wish list of the qualities a person would like to have.”
