Religion is a personal choice and every person is entitled to his own opinion when it comes to religion. There are so many atheists in the world who do not believe in the very existence of God. Then there are Agnostics, people who are confused about the existence of God. Similarly, people with syncretism religious roots are people who believe in blending various different kinds of religion and people practicing pluralism are those who consider all religions equivalent. Thus, people may deny or accept the existence of God but the very truth is that each person thinks about God.
The important question that arises is should we be God Fearing or God Loving? People who are God loving love God in every which way and everything that they do is out of the love for their God. On the other hand, people who are God fearing fear God and thus, all their actions are in some or the other way guided by their fear of God. We must be God fearing. Fear is a very powerful feeling and also a very compelling tool. Fear can really stop a person from doing the wrong things. Whenever a person is about to do something wrong and the idea of the omnipotent and omnipresent God comes in his conscience, he becomes scared of the consequences and thus, stops himself from doing it. On the other hand, the God loving people often end up doing the wrong thing thinking that their loving God will forgive them for their mistakes and thus, also end up doing the wrong thing. Thus, fear is important to control the urges that compel a man to do the wrong. This is precisely the reason why so many people believe that we must be God fearing and not God loving or rather, if a person is God fearing, he should also be God loving.
The concept of fear of God comes from Abrahamic religions. Abrahamic religions are a kind of religion that believes in the existence of only one God. The three most commonly practiced Abrahamic religions are Judaism, Christianity and Islam. In each of these religions, certain things have been stated to be completely forbidden and anyone who does the forbidden things is considered a sinner and is bound to be punished by God. Thus, the very concept of being God fearing comes from these Abrahamic religions.
Some people believe that to get something done out of fear is wrong for many a times, fear compels a person to do something that they do not believe in and that eventually leads to problems. Also, at times too much of fear leads to repulsion or rebellion. When such a case happens, then, a person often revolts against religion and thus, often goes on the path of Godliness. Thus, many people believe that too much fear of God is not a good thing and thus, we should be God loving rather than being God fearing. However, love does not stop a person from doing wrong. It may inspire to walk on the right path but when the inspiration dies, the love is not strong enough to keep the person on the right path. In such a case, it is only the fear of God that compels a person to do the right thing.
This is perhaps the reason why so many different religious scripts and books make a mention of why we must be God fearing. The Book of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of Hebrew Bible clearly states that, “Gather the people together, men and women, and children, and thy stranger that is within thy gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear the LORD your God (31:12)” and “That they may learn to fear me all the days that they shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children (4:10)”. Samuel, mentioned as a prophet in Holy Book Quran and considered as a leader of ancient Israel stated in his summons, “If ye will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both ye and also the king that reigneth over you continue following the LORD your God.”
Thus, most religion talk about the fear of God and consume it as a driving force for keeping the notorious and evil mind of any human being from doing wrong. Thus, we must be God Fearing as it is only the fear of God that keeps us on the right path and inspires us to the good thing in life but the fear should never become a compellation as that will eventually lead to repulsion and negativity against God.
