IMT Ghaziabad (IMTG), India’s premier management school with a distinct focus on grooming Leadership through Innovation, Execution and Social Responsibility, launches its 1st Innovation Day on February 3, 2018, at its campus; leapfrogs in pioneering to fill the void in the B-school space. Supported by StartUp India and associating with Knowledge Partners like DiPP, TiE-NCR, LetsVenture, etc., IMT Ghaziabad exhibited around 50 innovative project exhibitions by students who have undergone a full two credit compulsory course on Design Thinking and Innovation (DTI) and select start-ups on the event day along with hosting a combination of immersive workshops, panel discussions and expert Lec-Dem sessions.
The inaugural session of the event was graced by the Chief Guest Mr. Sunil Goyal, COO, Sopra Steria & Co-Chair, NASSCOM, Regional Council. Extending a warm welcome to one and all, Dr. Poonam Garg, Professor, IMT Ghaziabad, said, “IMT Ghaziabad was established in 1980 with a vision of creating a practice based institution. Imbibing the philosophy of ‘Doing’ leads to ‘Knowing’, the institute, along with its various new courses, has introduced a one-of-its-kind required a course on ‘Design Thinking and Innovation’ in its flagship 2-year PGDM programme. As a part of the successful culmination of the course, the institute has organised IMTheInnovator, to provide students with a platform to showcase their select prototypes as also to interact with existing start-ups and the entrepreneurial eco-system”.
Setting the tone to the day-long event, Dr. Atish Chattopadhyay, Director, IMT Ghaziabad, said, “It gives me immense pleasure to say that IMTheInnovator comprises exhibitions by our students who have worked in teams to apply their practical knowledge and acumen derived from the concepts of Design Thinking, in solving real-world problems. Enunciating on pioneering in taking the lead to introduce a course of Design Thinking and Innovation with a rejigged curriculum in 2016, Dr. Chattopadhyay said, “Like Medicine, Management is an applied discipline. With the introduction of courses like Design Thinking & Innovation, IMT Ghaziabad looks forward to groom future leaders who are skilled in creative problem solving, innovation, and human-centred “Design Thinking.” Dr. Chattopadhyay also proposed that going forward IMT Ghaziabad would host IMTheInnovator, every year as one of the flagship annual event of the institute.
Mr. Sunil Goyal, COO, Sopra Steria & Co-Chair, NASSCOM, Regional Council, during his inaugural address categorically hailed IMT Ghaziabad for introducing a required course on Design Thinking Innovation for the 2-year PGDM students, and said, “Design Thinking is fast changing the whole innovation process, and it is exciting to see Design Thinking as a part of the MBA course at IMT Ghaziabad.” He also said that while today there are still those corporates who have not adapted to Design Thinking, it’s thrilling to see that amidst the academia which is always blamed from staying behind, IMT Ghaziabad stays ahead of time filling the void in the B-school space by introducing a course like this and coming out with such innovative initiative called IMTheInnovator.
The inaugural session also had Dr. Ravikesh Srivastava, Dean-Academics, IMT Ghaziabad present in the ceremony.
The day-long event also hosted fire-side chats and workshops on Raising your Seed/and or Angel Fund by Mr. Kashif Alam, Head, Investor Relationship and Partnership, LetsVenture; How Blockchain Tech Can Change the World by Mr. Harmeet Monga, Programme Head, Stashi Studios; and, Let’s Your Content Speak Out by Ms. Aditi Syal, Founder, Vocaburry. The exhibitions by the students and start-ups, at IMTheInnovator, were presented in front of the panels of expert jury members who adjudged the following teams as winners and runner-up.
First Prize worth INR 50,000 was bagged by team We are the Change comprising first year PGDM students Namratha N Pai and Shreya Agrawal. The second prize worth INR 30,000 went to team Reusable Diapers comprising first year PGDM students Utkarsh Tripathi, Anurag Shukla, Sarthak Kumar, Richa Jain, Mayank Jain, Mudit Arora, Ishan Kulkarni, Parshvi Sindhu, and Shubhendu Saurabh. The third prize worth INR 20, 000 was given to team CoCo –Gender Free Toys, comprising first year PGDM students Subhadeep Sen, Aditya Gupta, Tanuj Vatsal Gupta, Aayushi Agarwal, Sonali Mangla, Yash Jain and Yash Sayla.
The prize money given was worth INR One Lac. The Entrepreneurship Cell of IMT Ghaziabad coordinated in hosting the event. IMT Ghaziabad remains ever committed to promoting and harnessing the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the institute. As IMT Ghaziabad believes that its curriculum allows each student to specifically develop entrepreneurial orientation and make them “practise oriented” and “business ready”, the institute is plausibly the only B-school in the country to have an entrepreneurial immersion with start-ups spanning across six weeks for each student in the second year of the 2-year flagship PGDM programme. The institute also supports an an in-house startup Incubator, access to the entrepreneurial ecosystem & IMTG alumni as mentors. In addition, the institute provides an stipend of INR 35k/month for a period of 1 year & an option of deferred placements. IMTG is the only institute with a startup internship.
