A lot of people consider quantity more important than quality. I have met many people in life who put their impetus on doing many things imperfectly rather than doing one thing perfectly. Being the jack of all trades might serve you good at times but if you wish to be remembered as someone who was the master in his field, you should be quality conscious. The question is simple. The question is one- do you wish to be the jack of all trades and master of none? Or, do you wish to be jack and master of one trade and excel in it every way?
As an M.B.A aspirant, it is important that you make your choice now. The choice that you make now will continue to affect you all your life for the major decisions of your life will be made accordingly. As someone who has lived a little life and experienced all things good and bad, I would recommend you to always pick quality over quantity.
If you are confused about which road to take, whether to learn to compromise with quality or not, take out a few hours and do your research. If you study well, you will recognize that major brands in the world succeeded in reaching the top only because they never compromised with the quality. One can find examples from all fields- be it clothing, science, cars or any other business.
If you consider some of the biggest names in the designer world, like the Armani, Versace, Bvlgari, Victoria’s Secret, Tom Ford etc., you will realize that these names have achieved such popularity and trust in market because they never compromised with their quality. The buyers know that when they buy an Armani or a Versace accessory, they may be spending a little too much but what they will get in return would be something that would be worth its value in money.
Similarly, you may see that the Swarovski crystals are extremely expensive yet people buy them. Why is it so? The answer is simple- people like Swarovski because they know that the crystals created by them are worth their value and also master pieces. Swarovski has created a name for giving just the best and nothing less. This, you would find true, for all brands (irrespective of whatever they make). If people trust a brand for producing just the exclusive kind of range, they will pay any price to get the brand’s product, the reason being that all people like to buy nothing but just the very best.
During the years, when you are developing the skills of business and craft of right choice within you (Which is now), it is extremely important that you learn to choose quality over quantity. It is also important that you learn to give quality over quantity. It may be possible for you to indulge in five tasks at one time but if you do all of them together, the chances are that you would not be able to do any of them perfectly. If you do each of them well enough, then perhaps, you are great at multi-tasking. However, not many people excel at multi-tasking and for these people, it is better to stick to one thing and do it right rather than doing many things and doing all of them all wrong.
Once you are into the field of business administration, always give a lot more important to quality than anything else. There may be times, when you might have to work thrice as hard as normal to produce a project of best quality. There may be times when you may be given an offer where you get a chance to earn extra profit by degrading the quality of your product or work but always abstain yourself from being exploited by greed. Always remember that money is important and so is the quality of your work. If you choose profits in the present, you will never be able to create a niche for yourself in the market. However, if you continue to deliver quality, you will be one day be definitely recognized as one of the best names in your business.
Like it is always easy to take the easier road, it is always easy to choose profits or short term benefits over long ones. The person, who realizes the importance of long term profits and is able to visualize the future, will always stick to quality. As an M.B.A aspirant, start working towards the bigger goal from now on. It is always easy to take the road that everybody else travels on but it is always difficult to take the road less travelled. However, if you take the tough road now, it will make a lot of difference. As Robert Frost once said,
"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. “
Being quality conscious will demand you to work harder. However, being quality conscious will also establish you as a person who can be trusted for delivering the best, irrespective of what the conditions may be. It is for you to choose what do you wish to be.
