Adversity teaches you a lot

Many believe that adversity is the best teacher.A Roman poet once said, “Adversity reveals genius, prosperity conceals it”. It is true that when you are faced with difficulties, you come up with creative ways to tackle problems.

Along the way, you learn a great deal about your strengths, weaknesses and your capabilities. When handling problems, you put your intelligence to test. On the other hand, when you are prosperous, you tend to be complacent. There is no need to put in additional amount of hard work. In fact, you don’t get to learn much when you are leading a happy life.

In adversity, your goal is to survive. For example, if someone loses his job because of recession, he will come up with ways to make ends meet. He will venture into various areas and put his capability and intelligence to test. He will work harder to survive in this world. This is when a person will be willing to take a risk. When we compare two people, one who is a poor person and another who is a rich person, we will realise that the poor person makes use of his skills and abilities to progress in life. Since he does not have wealth, he has to develop other traits that will be useful for his sustenance. On the other hand, a rich person will not go the extra mile to achieve his goals. He has wealth, which will help to him to gain resources that will ultimately help him to succeed without working very hard.

Adversity helps you to become tolerant, patient and determined. When tsunami hit South East Asia in 2004, people were forced to swim in strong currents to save themselves. They learnt to survive without proper food, healthcare facilities and shelter. Close to 2 million people were affected. This natural disaster taught people to build stronger homes, to survive on plants and shrubs and to come up with innovative ways to treat injuries.

So, never get scared of problems and adversities because you get to learn a lot about yourself and your surroundings when your survival is at stake. Handling adversities helps you to become a stronger individual, who is more confident of his abilities and skills. Someone said it correctly, “Adversity brings about knowledge and knowledge brings about wisdom”.
