3rd day of TEQIP at IIM Raipur
Published : Thursday, 16 October, 2014 02:44 PM

Participants of Faculty Development Programme under TEQIP that is being organized by IIM Raipur were addressed by Prof. B.S/ Sahay, Director on the third day of the Faculty Development Programme.  During an interactive session, Prof. Sahay detailed why Accreditation should be given importance and the benefits of Accreditation  and the relevance of Washington Accord for the technical education institutions across the country. “Accreditation is a proof of achievement of the set standards for the collegiate programs.

Compliance of these standards by institutions is a must” Prof. Sahay said. Graduates produced by the institutions with programmes  accredited by the accrediting bodies in the country and abroad, shall have more benefits such as enhanced employment opportunities, registration and certification for global programmes, global mobility etc. He also mentioned that periodic accreditation ensures the institutions continuous improvement in the standards of quality of education, quality of student intake, quality of teachers and the infrastructure.

While stressing upon the Washington Accord, Prof. Sahay urged all the engineering institutions to concentrate on Outcome Based Education, rather than working on Output Based Education. He also specified that the factors affecting transiting forces in higher education include internationalization and globalization of education and workforce, demographic shift and technology supported learning (e-learning). He concluded that accreditation indicates compliance assessment of set quality standards by the institutes for a global recognition.

In a separate session, Professor Sanjeev Prashar, Professor, IIM Raipur presented illustrative situations depicting the requirement of counselling. Prof Prashar narrated the crucial causes of stress in students in higher educational iinstitutionsare change in environment, change in eating and sleeping habits, not enough money, unrealistic expectations/pparental expectations, career indecision, alcohol/drug problems, serious mental illness (e.g., bipolar, schizophrenia) etc. He urged all the faculty participants to transform themselves as ‘counsellors’to counsel their students and respond to distressed students.

In the next session on ‘Communication and Behavioral Skill’by Prof. Vinita Sahay has stressed upon the importance of effective communication at institution level and individual level. ‘How to improve learning, nonverbal communication and the art of presentation making’were the key issues Prof. Vinita Sahay stressed upon. She detailed the types of communication and their importance which becomes more crucial since the participants of the program hold senior positions. As they grow in their career, need for an effective communication becomes more and more important.
