Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr. Raman Singh to address the 6th Annual Convocation at IIM RAIPUR

The upcoming convocation at IIM Raipur marks the first step for fresh Business Management Graduates to step out into the world and stand true to the lessons that they have learnt.The sixth Annual Convocation Ceremony will be held on Friday, 5th May, 2017 at GEC Campus, IIM Raipur. The occasion will be presided by Chief Guest, Dr. Raman Singh, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. It will also be graced by eminent personalities likeMrs. Shyamal Gopinath, Chairperson,Board of Governorsand Prof. Bharat Bhasker, Director, IIM Raipur.

Dr. Raman Singh is a senior politician in India and is the Chief Minister of the State of Chhattisgarh since December 7, 2003. A member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Dr. Raman Singh by profession is an Ayurvedic doctor. After completing his Bachelor’s degree in Ayurvedic Medicine (BAMS), he practiced Ayurvedic Medicine for years. Many a times he treated the poor free of cost, and his simplicity, openness and yearning to serve made him quite popular among the natives.

Dr. Singh began his political career with the youth wing of Jana Sangh and was first elected as public representative in 1983. He was the Member of Parliament from 1999 to 2003 and has served as Union Minister of State of Commerce between 1999 and 2003. Dr. Singh is the longest ever serving Chief Minister from BJP.

Dr. Singh is the main driver of growth and development in the State. He is a visionary leader and his vision for growth has reached to masses in the State. He is renowned in India for the reforms in Public Distribution System, vocational education, infrastructure and industrial development and public finance management in the State of Chhattisgarh. He has led the way in India to ensure transparency through IT enabled systems in areas like mining, civil supply etc. Models for development of railway network, industrial infrastructure and smart cities in Chhattisgarh are some of the key initiatives under his leadership which are being followed by other States in India.

Under the guidance of Dr. Singh, state is recognized as one of the top 5 states consecutively for 2nd time in Ease of Doing Business ranking conducted by World Bank in India. Under his leadership, Chhattisgarh has been declared as the Best fiscally managed State by Reserve Bank of India.

Chhattisgarh’ss State budget has increased 14 times and the Gross Domestic Product of the State has registered more than five-fold increase in last 16 years. Chhattisgarh is Second Best State of India with regards to investment intents since 2010 with more than 14% of the total investment intents attracted in the country.
Dr. Singh received the “Bharat AsmitaShreshtha Jan Pratinidhi award” by the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India, K. G. Balakrishnan, on February 3, 2008. He was ranked as number one Chief Minister by India Today Magazine in 2005.

Dr. Singh’s international engagements include participation in the sixth meeting of Common Wealth Nations Parliamentary Union in 1994. He also led the country in the Indian Trade Fair in Israel, Nepal, Palestine and Dubai. Dr. Raman Singh has led delegations, for attracting investment in state, as chief minister of the state to United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada and China.

His presence at the convocation will be a moment that will be remembered and cherished by the students, and a way for parents to celebrate their child’s success. The convocation ceremony in itself is a symbolic event that represents all of the hard work and accomplishments that students have partaken in to earn their status as a graduate from one of the premier b-schools of India.

Mrs. Shyamal Gopinath, Chairperson, Board of Governors, IIM Raipur will also preside over the function. She is Chairperson of HDFC Bank and formerDeputy Governor of RBI, a position she served for seven years. She is also the Chairperson of the Corporate Bonds and Securitization Advisory Committee of SEBI. She has guided and influenced the national policies in the diverse areas of financial sector regulation and supervision, development and regulation of financial markets, capital account management, management of government borrowings, forex reserves management and payment and settlement systems.In her more than 39 years of experience, she has served as the Chairperson of various boards and committees. She served as the Chairperson of the Clearing Corporation of India Limited and ClearcorpDealing Systems (India) Limited. Her presence will enlighten the students and will motivate them to achieve all the zenith of success.

As the date of the 6th Annual Convocation approaches, the Director of IIM Raipur, Prof.Bharat Bhasker, is of firm opinion, “Our students are our brand ambassadors. They will go out intothe world with the learning you acquired here at IIM Raipur and you will make us proud with your contributions andachievements.”
