Creating Platform for India-centric Cases: IIM Raipur Takes The Lead

Moving forward in its endeavor of establishing itself as a world-class research based institute, IIM Raipur in association with ET Cases is holding a two day 2nd Global Summit on Management Cases (GSMC 2016) on 5th and 6th February, 2016. The main objective of the summit is to create a reservoir of Indian cases to facilitate learning in the Business School campuses across India. The Summitaims to highlight real challenges, decision dilemmas& incidents faced by the corporate world today. Through this summit, IIM Raipur provided a platform to various researchers, faculties, practitioners, consultants to present their cases on various real time corporate problems.

The event was graced by eminent personalities from across the globe - Mr. William W. Kooser, the Associate Dean for Global Outreach at the University of Chicago, Booth School Of Business; Ms. Preeti D’Mello, Leadership Development and Systemic Coaching & Mentoring at Tata Consultancy Services; Ms. Ashwini Deshpande, Founder & CEO, Elephant Design; Mr. Rahul Kapur, Associate Director, Fractal Analysis and Mikhail Plotnikov, Professor, National Research University, Russia.

The event kicked off with an introduction of GSMC 2016 by Prof. Vinita Sahay, the Summit-co chair. While introducing the Summit, Prof Vinita Sahay has highlighted the importance of the case teaching and learning in the context of business and management. She also took pride in IIM Raipur being the only institute with a mandate to write a case for all its research scholars, a stepping stone towards making IIM Raipur a research based institute. In the welcome address by the Summit patron Prof. B.S Sahay, Director, IIM Raipur, he stressed the need of case based learning in management studies and proclaimed that as cases present a real life situation, they prompt the participants to make critical decisions and therefore this pedagogy prepares them for the challenges they are going to face in the corporate life. He also emphasized that Indian business cases need to be promoted in the management institutes across the globe and this summit is an effort to promote the same.

The Keynote Address by Miss Preeti D’Mello, highlighted the fact that education triggers the urge in oneself to grow where one gets the opportunity to grab a holistic view of a real business situation and engages everyone to the core. Case studies enable students to put themselves in the shoes of actual practitioners and test their understanding of theory, ability to connect theory with application, and develop practical insights. She has also described the case learning as “learning from the learnings and experience of others”.

On this occasion during the inaugural function, two edited books published by ET Cases, titled i) Hand Book on Management Cases and ii) Indian Management Cases were released by the Chief Guest and the Summit Patron.

The Chief Guest of the event, Mr. William W. Kooser, shared with audience the 3 I’s-Ideas, Innovation and Integrity of values, to successful case building. His message was to challenge the technology, focus on fundamental business and act through discoveries. He held very high regard of IIM Raipur for this initiative as this small embryo over a period of time would yield fruits which would benefit Business schools globally. He has also narrated that case teaching and learning as ways to make the ideas better.
