IIM Raipur Welcomed 7th PGP and 5th FPM Batches

IIM Raipur held the Inaugural Programme of 7th PGP batch and 5th FPM batch on 1st July, 2016. The Chief Guest of event Shri Vivek Dhand, Chief Secretary, and Government of Chhattisgarh welcomed the new batch by showcasing the development of the state of Chhattisgarh. In his address he stressed upon the abundance of natural resources and skilled workforce in the state that has led to the state being ranked 4th in ease of doing business in the country. He also invited the students to visit the smart and planned city of Naya Raipur, which has witnessed investment to the tune of 10,000 crores. In conclusion, he addressed the menace of extremism in the state and measures taken by the state government to counter it like setting up of medical colleges, imparting science education and construction of 1300 Km of road in affected area, among many.

Earlier, Prof. B.S. Sahay, Director, IIM Raipur in his welcome address to the 7th PGP batch enumerated the Institute’s accomplishment in the field of research mentioning that thefaculty of IIM Raipur published 30 research papers in refereed journals, 12 cases in classified casehouses, 19 papers in national and international conferences.Highlighting the various opportunities at the institute, he informed the new batch that they could avail themselves of foreign exchange programs in partner institutes. They were also apprised of financial support available for financially poor students, so their aspiration of participating in global competitions is not clipped. Encouraging the new batch to become job creators, he called on the new batch to explore opportunities of entrepreneurship in the state and also seek support of the proposed incubator in this regard. Closing his address, he urged the students to imbibe skills to become a great leader by making best use of resources and atmosphere of the institute.

The Student Profile of the PGP batch was presented by Dr. S K Mitra, Chairman Admissions. The batch profile of IIM Raipur was significant in having about 33 percent female students and 26 percent student from non-engineering background. The other highlights were the representation of the maximum students from Maharashtra and 5 students being from Chhattisgarh. Present on the dais, Prof. Sumit Gupta, the FPM chairperson welcomed the 5th batch of FPM students. Describing the profession of teaching, he called upon the new batch of the students to become a role model for society besides exceling in research work. Later, Introduction of the PGP program and the faculty was made by Dr. PRS Sarma, Chairman PGP. The students received the message of the Chairperson PGP with a round of applause. The inaugural program culminated with vote of thanks by Dr. Debdatta Pal, Chairman PGPWE.

Earlier, the day started with various other activities for the new PGP batch. “You’re the chosen ones who are part of this community who’ll take this country, family to greater heights” second day of the ongoing orientation programme of Indian Institute of Management Raipur (IIM Raipur) commenced with these inspiring words of Swami Vyomapada Dasa, ISKCON, Bhilai. He enlightened students about the importance of “Values and Ethics in Professional Life”. He also advised them to lead a life that is value driven so as to achieve completeness in their professional and personal lives. His wisdom and profound understanding of the human condition especially in the context of the present generation resonated with the audience.

The students were also guided on the ways to manage their time in the coming roller-coaster ride of two years by Prof. Vinita Sahay, Chairperson International Relations, IIM Raipur. She gave students a simple formula to manage their time which is to prioritize things coming in their day-to-day life and said when you prioritize, things become much simpler to tackle. She stressed on the fact that “Now time has come to clearly set a vision statement for yourself. It is about vision that takes one forward in life.”

For making students familiar with the current expectations of the corporates from the budding managers, they were exposed to a Panel Discussion on ‘E-shopping: New Age Paradigm’ whichwas moderated by Prof. Sanjeev Prashar, Chairman MDP, IIM Raipur. For the panel discussion, eminent corporate personalities,Mr. Avinash Parhi, Director (Category Marketing), Shopclues and Mr.Sripad Panyam, Vice President (Products), Urban Clap were invited on campus.

Mr. Avinash Parhi, Director (Category Marketing), SHOPCLUES, addressed the students that “aggression, customer first, ability to comprehend thought processes are the key things corporate look in budding managers.” Commenting the e-commerce business he pointed out that “a start-up is meant to solve problems and there are bound to be glitches in the delivery which needs to be aptly conveyed to the customers to make them understand and maintain the goodwill.”

Mr. Sripad Panyam, Vice President (Products), Urban Clapwas of the view that “to understand the customer in a better way, there should be continuous interaction with them. To deliver the value that a customer expects is the most important challenge for an organization and for a manager, is of training and identifying professionals who are aligned with the company’s vision and maintain integrity.”

Following the inspiring sessions, the students were engaged in a series of outbound activities. The activities were aimed at building leadership and team spirit among the new students.These activities consist of a variety of tasks designed to develop group members and their ability to work together effectively. They aim to strengthen interpersonal relationships between group members, break up the monotony, and get the creative juices flowing. The students thoroughly enjoyed this course of experiential learning through real life simulations. The day ended with several team building activities conducted by Praxis-EL.
