With the IIM Bill 2017, approved by Lok Sabha in July this year and now passed in the Upper House of Parliament as well, the IIMs become Institutes of National Importance and will have the authority to grant degrees. Indian Institute of Management, Rohtak welcomes the Bill as it will allow the graduates of IIM-Rohtak to get degree instead of diplomas.
This bill will provide statutory powers to IIMs in their functioning. Dr. Dheeraj Sharma, Director, Indian Institute of Management, Rohtak welcomed the bill, saying they had been looking forward to this move. “IIM Bill is a historic development in the field of education. It is passed with a view to provide more autonomy to IIMs which can possibly help IIMs in becoming top global management institutes," he said.
The primary beneficiaries to this bill will be the PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) and FPM (Fellow Program in Management) Students, who may now be awarded MBA and Ph.D. degrees which are more prevalent in international context. This will probably assist many students to get international placements and advance study option in international universities.
The provisions of the bill will allow for more financial and operational autonomy for IIMs. After the President of India signs the bill, rules and regulations will be developed for new and better way of functioning for IIMs.
There will be a provision of Coordination Forum of IIMs as an advisory body which will facilitate the sharing of ideas, experiences and concerns with a view to enhance the performance of all institutes.
