Convocation

He congratulated the graduating students for their hard work and success in completing their course. He encouraged them to be ready for the challenges ahead. Echoing the thoughts of Swami Vivekananda-‘Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, and live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success. Do not lower your goals to the level of your abilities. Instead, raise your abilities to the height of your goals.’

He noted that the business atmosphere in India has changed. There is a huge amount of optimism with respect to the growth potential of the country. New schemes of the government such as Startup India, Digital India, Make in India will create new opportunities for business to grow and provide a more inclusive economic order. He pointed out to the students that the enthusiasm with which they will embrace the evolution of the country will define their success. Mr Jaipuria reminded the students of the words of Prime Minister Modi, ‘Individual efforts can bring excellence but collective effort can deliver effectively.’

The Director of the institute, Dr Rajeev R. Thakur presented the Annual Report of 2016-17. He stated that the principle guiding factor of the institute is the promotion of human well-being through effective management education, which drives them to continuously upgrade and upscale the quality and spirit of their education endeavour. Dr. Thakur thanked the teachers and other stakeholders of the institute for their efforts in placing the institute amongst the top ranked B- schools in India. Dr. Thakur informed the gathering that in order to align with the emerging needs of the industry, two courses- PGDM Marketing and PGDM Services Management Programmes were revised based on the inputs from academicians, industry experts and faculty. The students can super specialise in areas like Consultancy, Banking and Financial Services and Retail. The PGDM Marketing Programme is meant to be a specialised programme for aspiring marketing professionals. The students can super specialise in any of the three sectors, that is, Rural Marketing, E-Marketing and Retail. He further added that the institute has placed emphasis on Experiential Learning. In a one of its kind initiative, started in 2015-16, the institute has developed the Marketing Management Course around field visits, to enable students to get practical exposure.

The Chief Guest for the Convocation was Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad, Hon’ble Union Minister of Law and Justice, Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India. Mr Prasad began his Convocation Address by appreciating the Jaipuria family, for their contribution to the cause of education. He envisaged an important role for the private sector to supplement the role played by the government in making education affordable, especially for the poorest of the poor, and recognised the contribution of the Jaipuria family.

Using his experience as a distinguished politician and administrator, he shared his understanding of the environment around with the students. He observed that in the present times, western influence was being equally matched by an Asian rise. He reckoned that India held a privileged position because of its Human Resource (65% population of people being 35 years and below). He highlighted the steps that the government has taken to empower Indians. He advised the students, who would become successful managers soon, to promote Digital Connect, because India, he believes, is emerging as a big centre of the world digital economy (that includes IT, Communication Services, Electronic Manufacturing, Cyber Security and Digital Payments). According to Mr Prasad, the Indian digital economy is going to become a $1 trillion economy in the next 5-7 years.

He reminded the students of PM Modi’s slogan to the public, ‘India’s Talent (IT) + Information Technology (IT) = India Tomorrow (IT).’ He emphasised the power of digital technology and motivated the students to actively promote this digital revolution and make a difference. He asked the students to ‘never lose hope and have extraordinary self- confidence.’  He advised students to carry a vision wherever they go and always keep the larger picture of the country in mind and recognise their role in the country’s development.
