Introduction & Objectives
Accounting is fast emerging as the language of business. A business enterprise communicates its results to the stakeholders through financial statements. These financial statements can be used in a variety of ways - to take credit decisions, investment decisions or simply to understand the revenue and cost structure of the competitors. Understanding of the financial statements enhances our ability to assess the prospects and risk being faced by the company. However over a period of time complexities of accounting have increased many folds. The operating managers find it difficult to understand and interpret the information conveyed by these financial statements. The workshop will be helpful in improving business decisions by evaluating company’s financial position. The participants will also be able to understand the disclosure requirements of the recently promulgated Companies Act 2013.

- The workshop will focus on understanding and analysis of the financial statements and will help the participants in answering the following questions and beyond:
- What do the financial statements tell us and what are their limitations?
- Why do we need GAAP and accounting standards?
- What are the key components of the Balance Sheet – assets, liabilities, reserves, deferred tax assets and
- liabilities?
- How is accrual basis of accounting different from cash basis of accounting?
- What do the top line and bottom line convey?
- What is depreciation?
- What is the impact of different methods of inventory valuation viz. FIFO, LIFO, Weighted Average Method etc.
- How to understand different types of cash flows as stated in the Cash Flow Statement?
- How to prepare and analyze common size statements and carry trend analysis?
- What are different measures of profitability – EBITDA, EBIT, EPS etc
- Can we judge the dividend policy of the company by using ratios?
- How to calculate return on assets and return on equity?
- How to use ratios for working capital management? How do companies manage with negative working capital?
- How is Current Ratio different from Quick Ratio?
- What are Debtor Turnover Ratio and Days Sales Outstanding?
- How to calculate and interpret Inventory Turnover ratio and Holding Period?
- What is the implication of using borrowed funds?
- What do interest coverage ratio and cash flow coverage ratios say?
- How to understand the stock market related terms – market capitalization, P/E Ratio, Dividend Yield, P/B Ratio?
- How to calculate Economic Value Added and Market Value Added?
- What is the rationale and impact of stock split, bonus and buy back of shares?
- Use of information like segment reporting, management discussion and analysis and Auditors Report.
- What is the impact of the Companies Act 2013 on the accounting and reporting requirements for the companies?
The Pedagogy
The course will be based upon participative discussion, real life cases and practical assignments to achieve the learning objectives. Annual reports of companies from different sectors will be used for analysis. Participants are encouraged to bring the financial statements of their own company to the course.

Faculty
Programme Director: Prof Sanjay Dhamija is currently the Professor of Finance and Accounting at IMI. He is a graduate of Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University and has done his M Com from Delhi School of Economics. He is a Fellow member of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (FCMA) and also a Fellow Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (FCS). He is also a qualified Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA-ICFAI) besides holding a degree in law (LLB) from Delhi University. He has over 17 years of industry experience in various organizations of repute including over 10 years in the senior management positions. Prof Dhamija has worked with reputed organizations like ABN AMRO Asia Equities (India) Ltd., HSBC Securities and Capital Markets (India) Private Limited, Escorts Finance Limited, DCM Shriram Leasing & Finance Limited and MMTC of India Limited. For the last 12 years he has been in academics. He has handled a number of consulting and training assignments with organizations in government, public and private sector like ABB, ABN AMRO Asia Equities, Apollo Tyres, Bharat Electronics, BHEL, Central Electricity Authority, Canara Bank, Department of Telecommunication, Department of Atomic Energy, Ericsson India, Fortis Health Care, Fidelity India, Hindustan Coca Cola, Hindustan Coppers, IBM Daksh, Indian Army, Indian Oil, Jamia Hamdard University, LIC, Neyveli Lignite, NHPC, NTPC, ONGC, Punj Lloyd, Pernod Recard Limited, Royal Bank of Scotland, SBI Life Insurance, Suzlon Energy, Transition Opticals, Virgin Mobiles, etc. His areas of specialization include management accounting, corporate finance, personal finance and
financial markets.
He has authored 5 books in the area of accounting, finance and company law including `Financial Management & Policy’ with James C Van Horne and ‘Financial Accounting for Managers’, both with Pearson Education and three books on the Companies Act 2013 with Prof G K Kapoor (Taxmann Publication).
