Students of MICA Ahmedabad immersed themselves in a unique experience by turning entrepreneurs for a day. As part of the 'Start Your Own Restaurant' event, curated by the student-run Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC), students across all programs turned entrepreneurs and got involved in managing inventory, applying marketing and sales techniques with a focus on sales, whereas the rest turned as consumers, all for a day. The event, held at Chhota, MICA's canteen, provided the students with a chance to embrace entrepreneurship and helped them understand what running an actual business in the food industry would look like.
Speaking about the event, Vedha Maskar, a student member of EDC, said, "Lot of students at MICA are interested in starting their business ventures. 'Start Your Own Restaurant' truly helped students embody the spirit of what it means to be entrepreneurs while practically applying their knowledge of marketing in real time which made it a huge success. The teams sourced the ingredients and equipment on their own and cooked themselves.”
A total of 8 teams comprising 2-4 students each amalgamated their culinary and marketing skills to create and offer for sale exactly 3 appetizing dishes per team.
Sharing his experience, a first-year student and a member of Team' Katering Everyone in Campus, ' Chirag Kamath said, "Through this event, we applied all the classroom learning practically on this one day. From brainstorming on a catchy name to using marketing and sales techniques, the entire experience was overwhelming.
We learned that managing the inventory was crucial and we had to stop taking orders as we could not keep up with the demand. We are happy that we made a healthy 20% profit. The event has certainly inspired us to open our own restaurant in the future." Chirag's team made Salami sandwiches and Nutella waffles.
To add to the spirit of the evening, the music committee at MICA, Studio7, played melodic tunes for the gathering and further enlivened the event up. The stage was later opened for all for an Open Mic and many talented MICAns recited poetry, played music and sang songs. The campus flourished at its best amid the joy of sharing food, music, and laughs.
