Mrs. Shyamala Gopinath Appointed Chairperson of BoG of IIM Raipur
Mrs. Shyamala Gopinath, Chairperson, HDFC Bank Limited, has been appointed the Chairperson of the Society and Board of Governors of IIM Raipur. The new Chairperson of the BoG of IIM Raipur was also the Deputy Governor of RBI for seven years. She has guided and influenced the national policies in the diverse areas of financial sector regulation and supervision, development and regulation of financial markets, capital account management, management of government borrowings, forex reserves management and payment and settlement systems.
Mrs. Shyamala Gopinath holds a Master's Degree in Commerce and is a CAIIB. Mrs. Gopinath has over 39 years of experience in financial sector policy formulation in different capacities at RBI. During 2001-03, Mrs. Gopinath worked as senior financial sector expert in the then Monetary Affairs and Exchange Department of the International Monetary Fund (Financial Institutions Division). She was responsible for preparing the accompanying document to the Guidelines on Foreign Exchange Reserve Management detailing country practices. Mrs. Gopinath was a member of the FSAP missions to Tanzania, Nigeria, Hungary and Poland and the Foreign Exchange and Reserve Management team to Turkey and Kosovo.
Mrs. Gopinath was also actively involved in managing India's balance of payments crisis in 1991, the fall out of the Asian and the Russian crisis, nuclear sanctions against India, Kargil war with Pakistan and the transmission of the recent financial crisis to Indian financial system and the markets.
In her more than 39 years of experience, she has served as the Chairperson of various boards and committees. She serves as Chairperson of the Clearing Corporation of India Limited and Clearcorp Dealing Systems (India) Limited. Mrs. Gopinath is also a Chairperson of the Advisory Board on Bank, Commercial and Financial Frauds (Government of India) and Chairperson of the Corporate Bonds and Securitization Advisory Committee of SEBI. She has been Non-Executive Independent Director of Tata Elxsi Limited since August 18, 2011 and Part Time Non Official Independent Director of GAIL (India) Limited since February 29, 2012. She serves as a Member of Indian Advisory Board at Catalyst Inc.
She has also been the Chairperson of the Advisory Board at Central Vigilance Commission since March 26, 2012. Mrs. Gopinath served as an Independent Director of E.I.D.- Parry (India) Limited from January 30, 2014 to August 5, 2015. Mrs. Gopinath served as an Independent Director of Indian Oil Corporation Limited from March 2012 to June 25, 2015. Also, she served as an Executive Director at National Stock Exchange of India Ltd., from January 2012 to February 20, 2014.
The appointment of Mrs. Gopinath as the Chairperson of the BoG of IIM Raipur will propel the institute in the direction of achieving its vision of making IIM Raipur a world class institute with global outlook imbedded with regional and national focus. IIM Raipur, which was set up by the Government of India in 2010, has been successfully running Post Graduate Programmes, Fellow (Doctoral) Programmes and Executive Education.
