The new batch consists of 66 students shortlisted on the basis of a rigorous selection process. While half of the students are from Jharkhand, the rest is drawn from the rest of the country including the other 15 States and the Union Territory of Delhi.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Fr. E. Abraham, S.J, Director of XLRI, Fr. S. George, S.J, Dean (Administration) – XLRI and Prof. Prabal K. Sen, Chairperson, Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) - XLRI.
Addressing the students, Fr. E. Abraham S.J, Director, XLRI said, “We are at an interesting phase in the history of Independent India. Our resurgent economy is slowly but steadily putting in place a favourable eco-system for budding entrepreneurs. It is interesting to see that this year’s batch comprises of students from diverse educational backgrounds and professional disciplines like engineering, law, business management, computer application, chartered accountancy and post-graduates in various other fields. We hope that this diversity among the students will help the process of peer learning”.
“We expect the students to make the best of their stint in XLRI during the next six months. We would like them not only to imbibe the nuances of entrepreneurship, but also to develop within themselves the values of honesty, integrity and fellow feeling, so that they turn out not only as competent entrepreneurs, but also as good human beings. We are happy to note that a majority of our past graduates from the previous five batches of this programme are into their own entrepreneurial ventures,” Fr. Abraham further added.
In his address Fr. Abraham also stressed that without emergence of a breed of conscientious entrepreneurs, an optimum utilization of available resources is hardly possible.
The Post Graduate Programme for Certificate in Entrepreneurship Management (PGP-CEM) is a full time 6-month program in the domain of entrepreneurship management designed and developed by Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) of XLRI to provide competency-based education to the candidates with a view to promoting entrepreneurship having equipped them with the essential conceptual and operational skills required for running an entrepreneurial venture successfully.
Besides the usual inputs on functional areas of business like finance, marketing, human resource management, economics and strategy, the curriculum focuses on specific relevant topics in entrepreneurship in India like family business, techno-entrepreneurship and agribusiness management. The programme also includes a separate subject on Social enterprises which has evolved as a distinct form of entrepreneurial ventures in the country with the objective to impart and enhance entrepreneurial skills and instill an integrative approach to business. The programme also includes a Project Formulation component under the mentorship of an expert member of the faculty to help the students to draw up a blueprint of action prior to the actual embarking on a business venture.
Prof. Prabal K. Sen, Chairperson, Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC), XLRI commented, “Our objective in launching this programme is to generate a breed of entrepreneurs who are equipped with conceptual and operational skills required for running an entrepreneurial venture successfully. The programme has been designed carefully in order to ensure that it helps meet the gaps identified in similar programmes currently being run elsewhere. We would like the graduates of PGP-CEM not only to be informed of the different functions of an entrepreneur, but also to be equipped adequately to get over the challenges as and when they encounter the same. We are happy to see that over the years, many of our graduates have come forward with unique ideas and launched their own ventures.”
Prof. Sen pointed out that as to gender diversity there is a definite improvement in the new batch, with 18 out of 66 students being girls. He however also said that as XLRI recognizes the imperative need for promoting entrepreneurship among the fair sex, efforts would be made by EDC of XLRI to secure a still higher representation of girl students in the programme in future.
The EDC Chairperson also referred to a number of innovative ventures launched recently by graduates of the five preceding batches and expressed the hope that the forthcoming batch too would throw up new entrepreneurs. Very recently, under the mentorship of the Entrepreneurship Development Centre,XLRI students like Saumitra Varma and Sujit Kumar have launched an innovative start-up programme to link local fish farmers with large customers across Jamshedpur -thereby giving them fresh fish as per their requirements just with the click of a button.
