The MOU was signed by Dr. BS Sahay, Director, IIM Raipur; Mr. KD Diwan, Chairman and Managing Director, HCL.

Mr. KD Diwan, Chairman and Managing Director, Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) introduced his company as a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Mines incorporated in 1967. It has four plants at Khetrinagar, Rajasthan; Ghatsila, Jharkhand;  Malanjkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Taloja, Maharashtra.

Mr. KD Diwan, Chairman and Managing Director, (HCL) stressed on how IIM Raipur’s involvement with HCL could make HCL more competitive and efficient, “Training and Development are extremely important for a sustainable growth. Not only does it help improve an organization’s competence, it also motivates people by giving them a sense of purpose”. He also announced that under the MOU, HCL shall institute awards for Best Doctoral Proposal; Best PGP (Post Graduate Program) student and Best PGPWE (Post Graduate Program for Working Executives) student.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. BS Sahay, Director, IIM Raipur stressed on the importance for management of talent in an organization. He mentioned that changing times and ever changing technology pose a challenge to all corporations. To cope up with such ‘turbulence’, companies need to constantly reinvent themselves. Training and Development play a vital role in this context. He detailed out the salient features of the agreement where IIM Raipur was committed to nurture the talent of Hindustan Copper Ltd. by undertaking management development programs, sponsored research, case development and writing, joint conferences and case competitions.

The two organizations have committed to hold competency development programmes for all levels of executives at HCL like Advanced Management Programmes (AMP) for Leadership Development, Senior Management Programmes (SMPs), Management Development Programmes (MDPs) for Middle Management level and Executive Development Programmes (EDPs) for others. HCL also agreed to encourage its employees to take up higher education – Post Graduate Program for Working Executives (PGPWE) and Executive Fellow (Doctoral) Program in Management.

To further IIM Raipur’s aspirations to become a leading research oriented Institution, the two organizations agreed to collaborate in research activities of mutual interest and benefit. The MOU stressed the need for a greater interaction between HCL employees and IIM Faculty members to identify these areas.

Industry managers and leaders take important decisions and meet several challenges in their everyday lives. These are, however, seldom documented. Under the MOU, the two organizations resolved to jointly work on case studies and create a repository of cases that can help train managers of the future. IIM Raipur faculty will publish the case studies in Harvard Case Publishing / Richard Ivey / Emerald / European Case Clearing. The skill of developing and writing cases helps organizations document their best practices. IIM Raipur, in association with HCL, agreed to organize case writing competitions on annual basis in the company. This will inspire large number of executives to enthusiastically participate in knowledge sharing and documenting key experiences.

Under the agreement, HCL would also consider to institute a Chair Professor in the area of Management.
