On 7th of July, Xavier University embarked on its journey with a vision to ‘Inspire Futures’, by providing young individuals with quality education and create well rounded professionals who will serve the society for the greater good. The university came into existence with the passing of the Xavier University Bill – 2013 on April 5, 2013 Today, on the 14th of July, XUB officially inaugurated its Ph.D programme. The event was formally started by Professor. Sandip Anand, who welcomed all the esteemed dignitaries and invited them to perform the ceremonial lighting of the lamp.
Among the notable guests were the Chief Guest for the evening, Dr. Pradeep Panigrahy, Hon’ble Minister of Higher Education, Science & Technology, Govt. of Odisha, the Guest of Honour, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Kumar, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Employment and Technical Education & Training, Govt. of Odisha, Father Paul Fernandes, S.J., Vice-Chancellor, XUB and Father Tony Uvary, S.J., Registrar, XUB.
Dr. Pradeep Panigrahy in his inaugural address congratulated Xavier University for the newly found Ph.D programme under which 27 students have been admitted for the current academic session. He also, stressed upon the fact that XUB has not only brought great opportunities for the state of Odisha but, also opened doors for better education, research and consulting for the entire nation. He emphasised on his belief in the cause of education and the need for commitment for making the best use of this opportunity.
After the formal inauguration, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Kumar, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Employment and Technical Education & Training, Govt. of Odisha, addressed the august gathering. Dr. Kumar spoke about the undying spirit of the Government and their vision to improve the quality of education and provide ample employment opportunities to the youth of the state of Odisha. He also highlighted the contribution of Xavier University, and thanked them for their prerogative to educate hundreds of brilliant minds.

ABOUT FR. PAUL FERNANDES, S.J. – Director & Vice-Chancellor
Fr. Paul Fernandes, S.J. holds graduate degrees in Theology, Philosophy and Mathematics. He did his Post-graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGD BM) from XLRI Jamshedpur, and M.Sc. in Economics and M.A. Licentiate in Applied Ethics from KU Leuven, Belgium. He achieved a Ph.D. in Economics and Ethics from KU, WWF Ingolstadt, Germany.
Fr. Fernandez has more than 21 years of teaching experience and more than 8 years of administrative experience. He has self-authored 6 books, and co-authored three, while successfully completing numerous consultancy assessments, researches and reports.
