Read on GD Burning topic: United Andhra will Unite India
Any kind of separation from existing state causes a lot of suffering for the people involved. On an individual level, it could be a child separating from his mother due to boarding school, while this could also mean division of States at a group level. Protests since early 20th Century for Gorkha land and the current case of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana can be seen.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy said that he is trying to persuade the GoM to reconsider its decision regarding separation of states. Problems arise with respect to sharing of Cauvery water, electricity, farmers’ problems, irrigation, education for children and employment around Hyderabad.
His entire political framework is currently working for the betterment of the state, which is unlikely to take place after division. Further, if Telangana is granted, other movements such as Gorkha land (Darjiling) and Harit Pradesh may gather momentum,
In order to protest against State division, the Samaikyandhra Movement was started in 2009 and is still going strong. It is supported by advocates in Andhra and Rayalseema regions, caste and religious groups of the two regions and students from 14 different universities.
Their mission is to prevent the division of Andhra, for which they keep staging agitations from time to time. The decision to separate these states was taken by Congress party at the Centre.
On the other hand, the reason why loyalists are asking for a separate Telangana state is because the area has been ignored in terms of development. For 48 years, poor people have been robbed here.
Farmers have lost irrigation water and witnessed major power cuts. Within the current statehood, Telengana has remained backward and issues have not been sorted out. Top politicians from Rayalseema were in power for more than 20 years, but still the area has remained backward. Only the wealth of coastal Andhra was taken away, which is currently a part of Seemandhra. In the past, Uttarakhand and Jharkand are successful examples.
Many people think that Naxalites in the Telangana region have a role to play in the region’s backwardness. But the truth is, their movements have gathered momentum due to the lack of progress. As the area has been constantly neglected, systematic theft of natural resources has taken place.
Conclusion: Though there are many backward states in the country, each cannot be granted an individual state. There will be much more disunity in the coming years, if this goes on. Therefore, Telangana should not be given a separate state, but all round development must be ensured.
