The Indian Institute of Management Raipur celebrated its 4th Annual Convocation on April 17, 2015 amidst an aura of pride and joy. Chief Guest- Honourable President of India, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee and the Guests of Honour : Shri Balramji Das Tandon, Governor of Chhattisgarh; Dr. Raman Singh, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and Shri Prem Prakash Pandey, Minister of Higher & Technical Education, Govt. of Chhattisgarh; and the Board of Governors were present at the ceremony.
Clad in their graduation robes, the 4th batch of enthusiastic graduates were inspired by the President, Shri. Pranab Mukherjee, who was the Chief Guest for the solemn occasion and the guests of honour.
Citing the genesis of IIM Raipur, its role and importance, the President said, “I’ve happened to see that IIM Raipur is relentlessly pursuing the objective of excellence in teaching, planning and human development. Education enriches lives, advances thinking, propagates new thoughts and enhances human capacity.”Describing the role of IIMs, the president emphasized on the transformative role such organizations of repute play in the development of a State and the Nation.
He reiterated the Indian government’s resolve to provide such institutions the best of Infrastructure and mentioned that the new campus planned at Naya Raipur would be a state- of- the art campus and wouldprovide amenities comparable to any other world class institute.
The President also praised IIM Raipur’s efforts in collaborating with other institutes, like AIIMS to address Healthcare issues. He also encouraged IIM Raipur to partner with other technical institutes for project implementations by setting up joint research centers, incubation centers and research parks. “IIMs can partner with IITs and identify research goalposts that may have a larger social relevance.
While IITs could provide technical solutions, for the same IIMs can make available the managerial expertise” – he said. He mentioned about the important decision recently taken of setting up a National Ranking Framework for higher educational institutions. And hoped that it would lead to a healthy competition amongst the institution for excellence.
Congratulating the students on completion of their program, he acknowledged their success and achievement and stated that the students richly deserved the applause and admiration. “Convocation signifies the culmination of the phase of formal education, which you have secured through labour and devotion.
It also symbolizes the beginning of a new journey where the knowledge you have gained and the skills you have acquired will be put to sterner test. You will achieve success but at times you may face adversity. It is in mitigating those trying circumstances that you will prove your mettle. Your discipline, commitment and determination will help you navigate through the rough terrain”, were his inspiring words of advice to the students.
He also reminded the student community of IIM Raipur to always keep in mind the fact that this wonderful education that they have received is a contribution of the nation, state and community. He emphasised that the nation invests in its Institutions and Universities because students are our future. Students, in turn, have an important responsibility, not just to themselves and their families but also to this country and its people. And the President was confident that the students who have earned their degrees today will take part in nation-building in a meaningful way.
Earlier Governor, Hon’ble Shri Balramji Das Tandon elaborated that IIMs have a responsibility towards generating a larger number of job creators than job seekers. Addressing the students, he said – “This occasion where you stand, you’re going to step into a new world, where every day is a challenge for you.
This degree is a permit for the students to perform on the stage of life and display your self-confidence and ethical values. Now your intrinsic values and the values and knowledge that you’ve acquired from your family, your school and colleges are put to test.”He encouraged the institute to partner Technical institutes and provide holistic solutions to problems. He urged the students not to quit to avoid the difficulties, but to find the ray of hope and attain success.
Speaking on the occasion the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Dr. Raman Singhemphasized that management institutes have a lot to teach and one can learn and apply these learning for capacity building and the betterment of the society. He discussed how by proper management of resources, Chhattisgarh has been able to minimize its energy losses and revamp their Public Distribution System. Congratulating the student on the occasion, he encouraged students to contribute to the society by instilling a sense of Social Entrepreneurship.
The convocation earlier started with, Chairman Board of Governors, IIM Raipur, Sh. HS Bhartiya welcoming the guests and congratulating the students on successfully completing the program. He advised the students “The knowledge and skills, and more importantly the moral and ethical values that IIM Raipur encourages would enable you to make a great start”. He also congratulated the parents and family members of the students for providing the students with much needed motivation and support during the program.
IIM Raipur, in its endeavor to fulfill its objective of becoming ‘a world class institute with global outlook imbedded with regional and national focus’, has started several initiatives. Under the rural immersion program, the students of PGPWE get an opportunity to interact with farmers and get sensitized about their needs. At the same time, students are also sent abroad to countries like Greece under the International immersion program. This year, 16 such students of the PGPWE went to ALBA Graduate Business School, Greece under the
International Immersion Programme for two weeks. They visited Greek industries and learnt the socio-cultural/ business environment of Europe & Greece.
Building on the achievements of IIM Raipur, Dr. BS Sahay, Director, IIM Raipur released the Director’s report. A copy of the souvenir was presented to the President and other guests present at the occasion.He enumerated the Institute’s accomplishment in the field of research mentioning that the faculty of IIM Raipur published 28 research papers in refereed journals andsix cases in classified case houses. The faculty members also presented nine papers in national and international conferences. IIM Raipur also organized one International Conference and two Summits this year.
Of the total 119 students of the 2013-15 PGP batch, 95 passed out today. The remaining 24 students have gone for Students Exchange Programme to partner institutions in different parts of the world to complete their final term. Similarly, 16 students from the 3rd Batch of PGP2012-14 convocated today as they had gone to complete their final term at partner institutions under Students Exchange Programme last year.
With an average work experience of 23.22 months, the PGP batch of 2013-15 was offered niche roles in some of the most esteemed firms of the country. All the 119 students of the PGP batch have been placed with reputed firms like Accenture, Bharat Forge, BPCL, Cognizant, Deloitte, DS Group, Future Group, Future Supply Chain, HDFC Bank, HT Media, ICICI Bank, ICICI Prudential, Idea Cellular, Infosys BPO, KPMG, L&T, L&T Finance, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., SBI, Tata Power, Tata Steel, Vedanta, Virtusa and Wipro to name a few. Some of the students bagged International offers with Kadence International.
To strengthen its international ties, IIM Raipur has signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ (MOU) with some of the finest business schools in the world including, Grenoble Ecole de Management, France; IESEG School of Management, France; HLL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, Germany; AIT Bangkok, Thailand; ALBA Graduate Business School, Greece; IPADE Business School, Mexico; Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea; University of New Castle, Australia. To this existing list, ESC Troyes, France ; Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and University of Melbourne, Australia became the new international academic partners of IIM Raipur in 2014-15. These MoUs focus on student and faculty exchange Programmes, collaborative research publications, organizing joint conferences and academic programmes.
The first student exchange program had seen four students being sent abroad in 2012-13. This number has gone up today to 24. IIM Raipur has introduced financial support to meritorious students to participate in the exchange program. It also encourages students to participate in international events of repute by giving financial support for up to 10 students every year.
The Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Working Executives (PGPWE) was instituted to impart managerial skills among working executives of companies in and around Raipur. Seventy-one students of the 1st and 2nd Batch of PGPWE convocated today. These comprise of executives working in sectors like Aluminum and Steel, Power, Banking and Financial Services, IT and Software.
Research is at the heart of IIM Raipur. IIM Raipur faculty members have continued to achieve recognition for their academic excellence by publishing and serving on the editorial boards of national and international journals. During the year, our faculty members published 28 research papers in refereed journals, 6 cases in classified case houses, 9 papers in national and international conferences.
IIM Raipur organized several conferences this year - 1st HR Summit, International Conference on Competitiveness, Competition Regulation & Corporate Strategy (jointly with IIM Kashipur) and Global Summit on Management Cases.
Students of the outgoing batches proved themselves not only in academics, but also won several accolades in extracurricular activities. Some of the achievements include case study, business plan, competitions held by Deloitte, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, ING Vyasa, Tata Crucible quiz, Cognizant, etc.
The IIM Raipur convocation ceremony also saw gold medals being given away by the first citizen of the country, Shri. Pranab Mukherjeefor scholastic performance. Among the Post Graduate Programme (PGP)students, Jayesh Surisettireceived the Chairman’s Gold Medal for scholastic performance in academics while – Arpit Bajpai received the Director’s Gold Medal andPavan Kumar Tatineni received the PGP Chairman’s Gold medal. While Aditi Singha l(2013-15 batch) and Anurag Rao (2012-14 batch)received Chairman’s gold medal for Post Graduate Programme in Management for Working Executive (PGPWE) batch.
At the end of the ceremony all the students of Post Graduate Programme (PGP) and Post Graduate Programme in Management for Working Executive (PGPWE) received their diplomas from theChairman Board of Governors, IIM Raipur, Shri. HS Bhartiya. The students walked the aisle wearing impressive ceremonious gowns as they start their new journey.
Profile of PGP5 Medal winners:
JayeshSurisetti is the recipient of the highest academic honour of IIM Raipur's PGP. He joined IIM Raipur in 2013-15 after completing his BBA from Symbiosis Centre for Management Studies (UG), Pune. An avid reader and a Philomath, he has been recruited by ICICI Bank.
ArpitBajpai: is a computer science engineer with experience in education sector. He completed his MBA from IIM Raipur with finance as his major. During his MBA, he secured top position in numerous competitions including an international runner up position at CRISIL Young Thought Leader for his dissertation on emerging markets. He is also a quizzer and won Tata Crucible Regional Round 2015. In future he would like to study economics and contribute in overhaul of Indian Education Sector.
Pavan Kumar Tatineni: During his stint at IIM Raipur Pavan interned at Larsen & Toubro (Corporate Finance) and was an executive member of Consulting and Entrepreneurship Club, IIM Raipur. Prior to joining IIM Raipur, he worked for Avaya Inc for 46months as a Software Engineer. Pavan has completed his under-graduation from CBIT, Hyderabad.

AditiSinghal has done B.tech in Computer Science and Engineering from BabuBanarasi Das National Institute of Technology and Management (BBDNITM), Lucknow, affiliated to U.P. Technical University with honors). She has a total experience of 7.5 years in the IT industry in the field of software design and development. She has majorly worked in HCL Technologies, NCR. She is currently working as a consultant to Naya Raipur Development Authority as an MIS Specialist.
Anurag Rao has done Bachelor of Technology from Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore in Mechanical Engineering. He has an experience of 8 years in the power generation industry. Currently working as Assistant Manager with NTPC Sail Power Company Limited, Bhilai in Turbine Maintenance Department. He hails from Raipur
