Today, the Zee Entertainment network with its various and varied channels and programmes, has become a household name in the Indian domestic space. But less well known is the man behind it all – Subhash Chandra – the man credited with the launch of the country’s first satellite television channel.
Chandra is the chairman of the Essel Group, under whose aegis falls an impressive list of corporate giants such as – Zee Entertainment, DNA (newspaper chain), Dish TV (Direct to home cable network), theme parks – Esselworld and Water Kingdom. Chandra thus dabbles in several trades at once, and he is surely, the master of all, given the huge profits that the Essel conglomerate accrues. Moreover, his empire shows no signs of stopping at all.
Subhash Chandra is not only renowned for his successful corporate venturesbut also for his philanthropy, his belief in paying back to the society and people from whom he gained s much. In this direction, he established TALEEM - Transnational Alternate Learning for Emancipation and Empowerment through Multimedia. This was the result of a dream to help those living in remote areas to access educational facilities. TALEEM was envisioned by Chandra to provide access to a good standard of education through distance and open learning initiatives.
Though this self-made Indian media mogul occupies the seventeenth rank in the Forbes’ list of billionaires, he has made sure that charity and humility are virtues that are not lost to him. This is what motivates us. One can buy an infinite number of things with money for one’s own self, but real happiness is derived when one keeps one’s selfish interests at bay and thinks selflessly about giving to those in dire need. To help and support the cause of the education of the underprivileged in India, Chandra’s Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation of India aims at removal of illiteracy in India and provides educational facilities to around eleven lakh impoverished children.
Interestingly, Chandra halted his own education after completing his standard twelve. But, Chandra is an ‘educated’ man in the real sense of the word – he understands his responsibility towards his fellow human beings and he acts upon his responsibility, which is quite necessary. He never let his lack of education come in the way of his dreams and he reached for the stars even when the night was at its darkest.
For instance, satellite TV in India was unheard of until he pioneered the launch of the country's first satellite television channel - Zee TVand others followed his example.
