Created by Mark Zuckerberg, at the age of 19 in 2004, Facebook has positioned him as one of the most powerful entrepreneurs in the world, having a strong impact on people’s lives.
Mark Zuckerberg’s interest in computers began at the age of 12, when he created a messaging program named ‘Zucknet’ that helped his father and family to communicate. He also created computer games with his friends for fun. Quite a prodigy, in high school, he created an early version of the music software Pandora, which he called Synapse, that evoked interest from several companies such as AOL and Microsoft. At Harvard, Zuckerberg established himself as the go-to software developer on campus. He built a program called CourseMatch, which helped students choose their classes based on the course selections of other users. He also invented Facemash, which compared the pictures of two students on campus and allowed users to vote on which one was more attractive. These programmes were hugely popular and laid the seeds of Facebook.
Facebook, which ran out of a dorm room at Harvard until June 2004, allowed users to create profiles, upload photos, and communicate with other users. So massive was the response to this site that by the end of 2004, it had 1 million users and Zuckerberg dropped out of college to devote himself completely to Facebook. He also moved the company to Pao Alto, California.
The success of Facebook has made Zuckerberg, the chairman, chief executive officer, and co-founder of Facebook, with a net worth of US $58.6 billion, the fifth richest man in the world. In 2010, the prestigious TIME magazine named him the Person of the Year 2010, stating that ‘the social network created by Mark connected almost every tenth person on the planet.’ Such is the power of the network that he has created. Mark himself says, ‘Today, Facebook is the third largest county in the world that knows about its citizens as much as no government on planet does.’ Mark Zuckerberg’s smart acquisitions of Instagram, Oculus Rift and Whatsapp have consolidated its position in the industry.
Mark also takes keen interest in philanthropy in areas such as, Education, Technological Innovation, Community Development, immigration Reform, Health. Together with his wife Priscilla Chan, whom he married on 19 May 2012 in Pao Alto, California, he has pledged to give 99 percent of their Facebook shares, worth about $45 billion through the Chan Zuckerberg Inititative.
