Marking a historic day for higher education in the country, Xavier University, Bhubaneswar (XUB) was inaugurated with much zeal and fervor today at the new campus located at Kurki. The joyous occasion was made even more ornamental by the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik as the Chief Guest. The university came into existence with the passing of the Xavier University Bill – 2013 on April 5, 2013 in the Odisha Assembly and has generated tremendous buzz and anticipation ever since. In concordance with the Jesuit Spirit of ‘Magis’, XUB has been envisioned to provide high quality education and to give back to the people of Odisha and the country. Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB), the 27 year old internationally reputed Business School is the flagship institution of XUB. Apart from management education, XUB has proposed to set up other schools of higher learning in various areas like Public Policy, Sustainability, Finance, Media Education etc. and Centers of Research in Public Policy & others.

Located at a sprawling campus at Kurki, XUB offers the latest in infrastructure, technology and amenities to ensure an enriching and comfortable educational experience. The university campus is also equipped with numerous sports facilities and houses highly qualified faculty members. Apart from offering MBA, MHRM and MBA-RM, XUB is also home to the School of Commerce which offers undergraduate courses such as B.Com Accounting, B.Com Finance, B.M.S. HR and B.M.S. Marketing.
Amongst the distinguished personalities present at the convocation were Shri Pradeep Maharathy, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development, Dr. Pradeep Panigrahy, Hon’bleMinsiter of Higher Education, Science & Technology, Most Rev. John Barwa, Arch Bishop, Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Diocese, Fr. George Fernandes, Provincial, President of Odisha Jesuit Society, Mr. Rajive Kaul, Chairman NICCO Corporation Limited, Kolkata and Chairman of the XUB Board of Governors, Fr. Paul Fernandes, S.J.,Director & Vice-Chancellor, XUB and Fr. Tony Uvary, S.J. , Associate Director& Registrar, XUB.
After formally inaugurating the new university by unveiling the plaque and launching the website, Shri Naveen Patnaik addressed the gathering. He highlighted the commitment of the government to promote higher education in the state of Odisha. He raised the issue of improving the quality of higher education in the country and underlined the role of private universities in the same. He stressed on the need for a youth policy to harness the energy of a young and growing state like ours and wished Xavier University would develop research as one of its core competencies.

Fr. Paul Fernandes, Vice-Chancellor and Director, XUB welcomed the esteemed dignitaries and recalled his meetings with the Hon’ble Chief Minister and the passing of the Xavier University Bill 2013 which paved the way for the establishment of the university. He proclaimed that Xavier University would embark upon a mission to churn out professionals, well-formed and capable, to transform the society and be the light for the world. He announced with pride that Xavier University, in its quest to be the front-runner in research, had already admitted 27 doctoral students and highly qualified faculty to guide them. The university also starts as the leader in the country in terms of the technical infrastructure – Data Center, Xavier One Portal, Xavier University Cloud, Video Book, EduERP, Data Analytics and Big Data Lab and a Social Media and Cloud Computing Lab, put in place with the help of leading corporates. He reiterated the university’s commitment to creating a ‘good, well-ordered society’ and expressed hope that the university would transform into Xavier Open University soon. He also expressed hope that the government would continue to provide support in terms of land and infrastructural funds so the university could expand to other parts of the region.

ABOUT FR. PAUL FERNANDES, S.J. – Director & Vice-Chancellor
Fr. Paul Fernandes, S.J. holds graduate degrees in Theology, Philosophy and Mathematics. He did his Post-graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGD BM) from XLRI Jamshedpur, and M.Sc. in Economics and M.A. Licentiate in Applied Ethics from KU Leuven, Belgium. He achieved a Ph.D. in Economics and Ethics from KU, WWF Ingolstadt, Germany.
Fr. Fernandez has more than 21 years of teaching experience and more than 8 years of administrative experience. He has self-authored 6 books, and co-authored three, while successfully completing numerous consultancy assessments, researches and reports.
