Develop points for discussion and read WAT topic: Divergent thinking is a stepping stone to creativity
Divergent thinking is essentially a thought process used by individuals to explore various possible solutions and come up with creative ideas. Divergent thinking is the opposite of convergent thinking, where individuals follow logical steps to arrive at a solution.
In divergent thinking, there are no rules – individuals simply generate ideas in a spontaneous and free-flowing manner; as such, it enhances the creativity of an individual. Today, organizations are looking for individuals, who can think outside of the box, and this requires them to adhere to divergent thinking.
An individual is able to come up with creative ideas if he has the capacity to take risks and is curious about things around him. Albert Einstein once said, “I never made one of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking”. And it is true – discoveries are made through divergent thinking.
Great innovations, including the washing machine, motor vehicles, the mobile phone, and the camera, are a result of curiosity and people’s desire to improve the quality of life. With divergent thinking, new ideas are generated and this ultimately leads to creativity.
Albert Einstein was right when he said, “You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created”. When there is a problem, you have to go one step above to find the right solution and this is where creativity and brainstorming come into play.
In organizations, when teams are required to find solutions to problems, they brainstorm and come up with all possibilities before narrowing down to one or two solutions.
Divergent thinking is important in every organization and without such thought process, we will never be able to come up with novel ideas that can revolutionize our lives.
Derek Landy, an Irish author and screenwriter, once said, “Doors are for people with no imagination”. For people who are creative, no doors can stop them and in fact, the sky is the limit.
