Develop points for discussion and read WAT topic: Planning and execution originate from the same stem
Many people have the misconception that planning and execution are completely different. This is not true; in fact, planning and execution originate from the same stem – the conceptualization of ideas. After people brainstorm ideas, they select the idea that they are comfortable with and plan ahead to help them reach their goal(s). The journey or the process from the conceptualization of an idea to its fruition is called planning. And the implementation of an idea is called execution.
In organizations, meetings are held on a regular basis to find solutions to existing problems. Here, employees come up with numerous ideas that can help solve these problems. Ideas that require more resources than what is available in the organization are immediately shot down and planning commences for the remaining ideas.
In the planning stage, a number of factors are considered, including the budget, availability of manpower, and the time required for the completion of the project. Once these things are in place, the execution of the idea begins. So, it is untrue that planning and execution are not linked – it is only through proper planning that an execution of an idea can be successful.
Planning is one of the most important functions of management because planning helps an organization to chart a course of action for the achievement of its goals. Apple, a well-known organization that designs and develops consumer electronics and personal computers, has been successful so far because its employees have been able to come up with interesting ideas, which have revolutionized the IT industry and the world. So, to sum it up, planning and execution can be successful if the ideas are brilliant.
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a French aristocrat and writer, once said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish”. Likewise, a plan without execution is merely an idea on paper. To ensure that you reach your goal(s), it is important to plan and execute ideas and planning and execution originate from the same stem – the brainstorming of ideas.
