On the account of World AIDS Day on the 1st of December, XIMB’s Social Responsibility Cell in association with The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), organised a session on AIDS for the people in the slums of Salia Sahi, Bhubaneswar. The event was planned in order to spread awareness about AIDS amongst the people. The event started with a brief Introduction about AIDS followed by a thought provoking speech by Dr. Mitali Mohanty. Dr. Mohanty is currently working with the Rural Development area for the Government of Odisha and has been very actively involved in spreading awareness and educating people about AIDS for the last 18 years.
Dr. Mohanty started her speech by stressing on the importance of World AIDS day and then went on to explain the 4 ways by which AIDS can be transmitted. She briefly explained each of them and constantly kept reminding people to be very careful while transmitting blood. She also stressed on the fact that the society should never ignore or disown people affected with HIV and should rather give them proper care and support. She said the government is already providing a lot of support for the affected people but the affected still miss adequate support from their families. It is our responsibility to ensure that we don’t differentiate the people who are affected by this disease.
This was followed by a very educational and inspiring documentary about AIDS which came from OCAS. The video focused on explaining about how people with AIDS should not be differentiated and how the society needs to support them. This attracted an encouraging participation and the audience actively picked up the message. The Assistant Co-ordinator from the GFATM team in Bhubaneswar gave the closing remarks and encouraged people to understand more about AIDS and also spread the awareness. The crowd responded with a huge round of applause for the organizers and for the noble cause that they had taken up. The Social Responsibility Cell of XIMB lived up to its tag line “A Smile is Contagious, Let’s Spread It!”.
