On 28th February 2015, the Knowledge Exchange and Information Centre (KEIC), MICA organized a one-day workshop on “Liberating Structures” for professionals in the field of Library Information Sciences (LIS). Liberating Structures is an innovative method of designing conversations in an inclusive manner in order to arrive at innovative solutions. More than 46 librarians and LIS academicians from institutes such as Nirma University, Indian Institute of Management (Ahmedabad), Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India, Gujarat University, Space Application Centre, TCS, ITER-India (IPR Project), PDPU, University of Mumbai, British Council Library (Ahmedabad), IIT (Gandhinagar), IIT (Jodhpur), CEPT University, Export Import Bank of India (Mumbai), ADINET, MS University, Baroda and other organizations from Gujarat actively participated in the day-long session.
Key facilitators of this workshop were Dr. Shailesh Yagnik Head- KEIC MICA, Prof. Saumya Pant , Mr. Himanshu Dandotiya, Mr. Rahul Mane actively supported by Dr. Niraj Patel and Dr. Lavji Zala of KEIC, MICA.
Libraries have transformed from being merely storehouses of knowledge into spaces for sharing information and further into community spaces. As a result of these changes, libraries and LIS professionals constantly face challenges associated with infrastructure, shifting user base towards digital resources, issues of online migration of all services and increasing expectations about timely and quality service delivery.
In such a case, Liberating Structures prove highly effective in comparison to other conventional methods which involve addition of resources, manpower or macro structures, through coordination and facilitation of dialogue with people. By engaging the visitors, the structure aims to allow users to generate more conversations and further the implementation of innovative ideas and design. Keeping in mind all these challenges and the need to facilitate a shared learning approach amongst stakeholders, this was a one of its kind workshop for academicians and professionals in the Library and Information Sciences sector in India.
