Out of the many talented people born in India or to Indian immigrants, who have made a name for themselves abroad, Dr. Atul Gawande has been playing a defining role in contributing to the society in the United States of America, practicing as a surgeon.

Initial Years

Dr. Atul Gawande was born to Indian immigrants to US in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Athens, Ohio. He has received his education from the best places such as Stanford University (from where he earned an undergraduate degree in Biology and Political Science), Harvard Medical School (from where he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine), Harvard School of Public Health (from where he earned a Master of Public Health). He completed his general surgical residency training at Harvard in 2003.

 

Professional Life

Dr. Gawande is a surgeon, writer and public health researcher. He practices general and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Samuel O. Thier Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He is also Executive Director of Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation, and Chairman of Lifebox, a nonprofit organization making surgery safer globally.

 

Dr. Gawande is also a prolific writer and author of many bestsellers. He pursues his writing seriously and has been a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine since 1998. He has written four New York Times bestsellers: Complications, Better, The Checklist Manifesto and Being Mortal:Medicine and What Matters in the End.

 

Present Achievement

Dr. Gawande has built his reputation as a path-breaking thinker, making significant contributions to the society, in matters of public health. He has recently been named CEO of the Amazon- Berkshire- JPMorgan Chase healthcare partnership, the first of its kind, aimed at disrupting traditional practices in the health industry and lowering the cost of health care. The company, of which Dr. Gawande has been named CEO, will oversee health coverage for 1.2 million employees of the companies and their families. The ever escalating cost of health care is the reason for this initiative, and with Dr. Gawande at the helm, it is sure to disrupt the health sector and bring in new changes to the way things are done in the health sector in the United States and the world.

 

Awards

Dr. Gawande has been the recipient of several coveted awards throughout his career. He is the recipient of two National Magazine Awards, Academy Health’s Impact Award for highest research impact on healthcare, a MacArthur Fellowship, and the Lewis Thomas Award for writing about science.

 

The impact of people like Dr. Atul Gawande transcends the physical, political and social barriers and can be felt across the globe. Still young and in his fifties, Dr. Gawande has many more years of productive life ahead of him and by the time he finishes, he would have established himself as the pioneer in the healthcare sector.
