Dr. Vandana Shiva was born to a couple who loved nature in the foothills of the Himalayan mountain ranges. Her father was the conservator of forests. Her mother was a farmer and had a lot of love for nature.
Born in Dehradun, Dr. Vandana Shiva was educated in St Mary’s School in Nainital. She then continued her schooling in Convent of Jesus and Mary Dehradun. The dual degree holder and a doctorate completed her M.Sc Honours in Particle Physics from the University of Punjab in 1973. In 1977, she submitted a thesis "Changes in the concept of periodicity of light” and obtained the M.A degree in the philosophy of Science at the University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada).
She completed her thesis on “Hidden variables and locality in quantum theory” and obtained PhD in Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario. Her PhD thesis talked about quantum mechanics and its philosophical underpinnings. Her love for education did not stop there. She pursued Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Technology at the Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
An environmental activist, extraordinary and highly talented human being has fought for changes in practice and paradigms of agriculture and food. She has raised her voice on women rights, environmental changes and many social problems.
Standing against civil disobedience on forests, Dr. Vandana Shiva focuses on the protection of farmers’ right. An author of many books, her first book Staying Alive was incredibly motivating and pointed out ecological insights.
She is the founder of Research Foundation for Science, Technology, and Natural Resource Policy (RFSTN). It was founded in 1982. RFSTN is an association and organization dedicated to developing sustainable types of agriculture. Dr. Vandana Shiva has worked for many non-government organizations like Third World Network, International Forum on Globalization and Women’s Environment & Development Organization.
A recipient of innumerable awards as recognition to her efforts and dedication to ecofeminism, biodiversity and environmental work, Dr. Vandana Shiva has proved to be a wonderful human being caring for the nature and its preservation. The VIDA SANA International Award, The Golden Plant Award, Pellegrino Artusi Award, HORIZON 3000 Award of Austria, The Blue Planet Award, The LennonOno Grant for Peace, The Save the World Award and The Sydney Peace Prize are a few awards which she has received. Right Livelihood Award is the first award received. The physicist turned activist has never let her personal life interfere with the love she has for nature and her contribution to the world as an activist.
