The personal interview is a critical step in MBA admission process and should not be taken lightly. PI is aimed at knowing a candidate more intimately - assessing the clarity of thinking process, future goals and the 'fit' factor with the B-school.
It provides the admission selection committee of a B school to evaluate your interpersonal and soft skills. With this aim MBA Rendezvous is presenting you PI tips so that you can be successful.
Are you suitably groomed to face PI?
First impression counts, which is why it is important to be properly groomed for a Personal Interview. Many candidates have the wrong notion that in order to look neat and tidy, they would have to shell out a fortune. This is not true.
Being properly groomed does not mean that you wear branded suits and put on layers of make-up. It basically means you should look professional, and this can be done without burning holes in your pocket.
For men, it is important to shave before going for an interview. Also, maintain a short hairstyle by getting a traditional haircut. Never enter an interview room with long beards and moustaches. If you are keen on keeping a moustache or a goatee, keep it short and properly groomed.
You should always wear clothes that are ironed. Make sure that you choose a shirt with a neutral color like blue or white. Also, check with the admission team of the business school on the dress code for the interview.
Some business schools expect candidates to wear formals, including a tie and a suit, whereas others may expect semi-formal wear. Always confirm the dress code to fit well into the culture of the business school.
For women, it is important to comb your hair and tie it neatly. For those who prefer to leave their hair open, make sure that it is not unkempt. Your face should be visible to the interviewer. So, avoid long fringes that may cover your face. You should not wear long and big earrings for a Personal Interview.
Remember that you are not appearing for a fashion competition. So, dress professionally. Also, wear a formal shirt with pants or a skirt (that touches your knee) and ensure that your clothes are ironed.
Above all, enter the interview room with confidence and poise. You are about to step into the business world. So, dress like one and you will surely impress your interviewer in the first glance.
