There are many people in this world who are book smart, but not all are street smart. There is more to life than fancy degrees and to survive in this competitive world, you need to be shrewd, smart and tactful.
The first step towards becoming street smart is to stop being nice to people all the time. The world is a notorious place where everyone is self-centred, only concerned about their well being and growth.
Those who are nice to everyone are often taken advantage of. One should learn to say ‘no’ when things are beyond your capabilities.
For example, in the workplace, try to complete all your tasks within the stipulated working hours. You may put in long hours at work from time to time but do not make it a habit. If you are stressed, learn to speak out and protect your health.
Another step towards becoming street smart is carrying a confident posture. Body language says a lot about a person. When you keep a straight back and walk with your head held high, people will automatically give you respect.
They will never mess around with someone who is confident and level headed. Many people who are intelligent do not exude confidence, which is why they are often targets of people with ill intentions.
Be it at the workplace or at school, control your emotions and speak in an objective manner. Many people get carried away by their emotions under extreme situations and they are unable to think in a logical manner.
This is when people will start forming a negative impression about you and will consider you as an immature adult. Responsibilities are given to people who can control their emotions and manage their work well.
Also, it is important to have a work-play balance, where you give your 100% at work, without neglecting your family and friends.
Everyone wishes to be street smart because only those who are tactful and shrewd can survive in this competitive world. It takes time for an individual to become street smart.
So, start learning the ropes and you will be successful in the academic and professional spheres of your life.
