Saugata Gupta, CEO, Consumer Products, Marico inaugurates new academic year of MICA

Published :  Lavleen Kaur Kapoor | June 30, 2015 | 02:26 PM IST

As June ends, MICA officially declared the academic year open, on Monday, June 29th 2014, to its students of the 22nd PGDM (C) batch, the 25th CCC batch and the 5th FPM batch. Saugata Gupta, the CEO, Consumer Products – Marico, graced the occasion with his presence as the Chief Guest.

MICA

Mr. Sethu Iyer, Acting Executive Registrar (I/C), invited the Chief Guest, Mr. Gupta along with the members of the MICA Governing Council, Mr. Sandeep Menon- Global Practice Leader- Digital Design and Strategy, Cognizant Interactive, Bangalore; Mr. Santosh Desai, MD and CEO, FutureBrands Ltd, New Delhi and the President and Director, Dr. Nagesh Rao, to jointly inaugurate the 3 programmes and light the inaugural lamp.

The President and Director, Dr.Nagesh Rao then took to stage to welcome the Chief Guest, all the members of the faculty and staff, as well as the students from various courses at MICA. He took this opportunity to introduce the Dean, Dr. Atish Chattopadhyay, and two of the newest members of the Governing Council- Mr. Tridip Shurud, Director and Chief Editor, Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust, Gandhi Ashram, Ahmedabad and Mr. Achal Bakeri, an Indian entrepreneur and founder, chairman and managing director of Symphony Limited, the world's largest air-cooler manufacturing company, to the MICA fraternity.

The inaugural function also saw a book release by the Chief Guest, Mr. Gupta – “Charity to Parity: New Dimensions of NGO Management”, authored by MICA Professor, Dr. Shubra Gaur and was described to give an organizational management perspective to students, scholars and practitioners alike. It is based on the works of Prof. Gaur in association with the Blind People’s Association in Ahmedabad, one of the city’s most efficiently run NGOs.

Post the book release, the new dean addressed the students of MICA and introduced Mr. Saugata Gupta, the Chief Guest for the occasion. The Chief Guest was presented with a Plaque and a bouquet of flowers and welcomed on stage to address the enthusiastic audience.

Mr. Gupta opened his keynote address with his learnings from both the industry, and life in general. He conveyed the importance of foundation and explained to the students how a strong base or foundation in any domain will automatically drive results. “In order to succeed at something, one has to not only like it, but also be good at it. Liking alone isn’t enough to advance in a profession, because in such a case the practice, in fact remains a mere hobby.”

He also went on to connote good grades as “surrogate for achievement motivation”, and urged the students to focus and prioritize on other important skills such as the ability to influence non-reporting relationships, being social and building bonds in a workplace environment, having a killer instinct and passion for winning and moving from simply a managing business to managing people.

Mr. Gupta said, “Finding balance in a VUCA world – one with Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity, is highly crucial in order to excel.” He encouraged the students to choose the power of the “AND” to overcome the tyranny of the “OR” and claimed that benchmarking, unlearning and reinventing are highly important for businesses to stay in the race and compete with one another to provide a comprehensive value add to the end consumers. Finally, the floor was left open to questions and an interactive session was conducted between the Chief Guest and students of MICA. Post the ceremony, as the tradition goes at MICA, Mr. Gupta planted a sapling on campus to commemorate the event.

Earlier last week, on 22nd June 2015, MICA organized an orientation programme for all its new students in PGP, CCC and FPM wherein the students were familiarized with the campus environment and facilities and taught basic courses like “Workshop on Appreciating Differences”, “Managerial Communication” and “Introduction to Incubator Programme.” The week ended on a high note with an extremely insightful session with the MICA Alumni – Ms. Nivedita Sarkar, Chief Manager (Brand) at IDFC Ltd, Mr. Siddhant Lahiri, Account Planning Director JWT, Mr. Preet Doshi, Assistant Manager, Consumer Insights, ITC Foods, Mr. varun Kapoor, Solutions Consultant, Adobe Digital Marketing Cloud and Mr. Shankar Narayan, Founder, ClickMyDay.
