TISSNET Paper and Exam Analysis

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) conducted its National Entrance Examination (NET) on 13 January 2019 for admission to various postgraduate courses. The overall sense about TISSNET was that it was a moderate to difficult exam. While English and Mathematics were very scoring, GK proved to be the toughest section for the aspirants. The exam, conducted in 39 test cities, comprised

100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) to be attempted within 100 minutes.

TISSNET 2019 Highlights

The key takeaway points from the TISSNET 2019 exam were:

- There was no negative marking for an incorrect answer in TISSNET 2019

- The TISSNET 2019 exam had a single question paper for all the MA programmes offered by TISS

- A total of 100 questions were to be attempted in 100 minutes

- Each question carried 1 mark

- There was no sectional time limit

- All questions were objective type

- The overall weightage allotted to the three main sections of TISSNET 2019 was as follows:

TISSNET 2019 Detailed Analysis

The detailed section wise analysis of TISSNET 2019 is as follows:

 

1. Mathematics and Logical Reasoning

A total of 30 questions from Quants (17), DI (7) and Reasoning (6) appeared in the exam. The questions were found to be easy to moderate by the aspirants. Candidates who attempted around 25-28 questions with a high level of accuracy would stand a good chance of scoring well in this section. More questions from arithmetic were asked like last year. This section has been represented with the following diagram.

2. English Proficiency

Aspirants found this section to be easier than the others. A total of 30 objective type questions were asked from this section. Questions on grammar were direct and easy. There were no questions on idioms, one word substitutions and analogy, hence, aspirants would have had it easy. Also, the two Reading Comprehension passages were a mixture of factual and inference questions with easy options to choose. A candidate who attempted 24-27 questions with reasonable accuracy is likely to score well in this section. The ideal time spent on this section by a candidate should have been 15-20 minutes. 3. General Awareness

Like previous years, the General Awareness section continued to be difficult to crack for aspirants. Out of 40 questions from this section, a candidate who attempted 23-25 questions spending close to 15 minutes on them, should be able to get a decent score in this section, considering the difficulty level. The fact that around 29 questions were from static GK and the remaining 11 from current affairs, made the going difficult for the aspirants. Around 20 questions seem to be difficult to attempt for the aspirants. The type of questions and their number is depicted in the following diagram.

TISSNET 2019 Expected Cutoff

The TISSNET governing body decides the cutoff once the results are declared, to decide who makes it to the next round of the selection process. Candidates are called for Group Discussion and Personal Interview based on the TISSNET Cutoffs. The expected cutoff of TISSNET 2019 is expected to be around 72+ for general category, going down to 68 marks for the reserved categories. This means that aspirants who score these marks stand a good chance of getting shortlisted for the subsequent selection rounds.

 

The TISSNET cutoff depends on a lot of factors, such as, difficulty level of the exam, number of applicants, number of seats at an institute, the course and location, to name a few.
