When Descartes said these words, he was searching for a statement that could not be doubted. He found that he himself existed as he was the one doing the doubting in the first place. Since then, this statement has been interpreted in a number of ways. But the most obvious reference that the statement makes is to one’s identity.
The statement points out to one simple belief, that thought precedes existence. The greatest gift man has is the mind, the ability to think, to reason. Only breathing oxygen does not affirm his existence. It is his thoughts and the whole body of views and opinions he has, that give meaning to his existence.

The entire life of a human being is essentially a journey to find one’s voice. To be able to speak for oneself and stand up for one’s beliefs and convictions is important to live a good fulfilling life. People who echo others’ thoughts without applying their own mind are doing a great disservice to the best gift given to them- their minds. History is full of examples of people who have followed the leader unthinkingly and unquestioningly and the consequences have been disastrous. Hitler’s Germany being a good example. Hitler was able to rule indisputably and was able to perpetuate a reign of terror because he had the support of masses who had turned into rhinoceroses (to use the metaphor by Eugene Ionesco). They suspended their thinking faculties and were blinded by the aura of Hitler.
As a marker of one’s identity, it is important to think. It is our thoughts that help us assert our identity. We are individuals in our own right because we can think and possess the ability to reason. Animals don’t have this ability.

Descartes’ statement also refers to the act of doubting. He asserted that the act of doubting one’s own existence shows that there must be a thinking mind behind it, which is capable of raising doubts. By implication, the given statement also points out to the importance of questioning and inquisitiveness. All thinking individuals essentially are inquisitive people, who are driven by a desire to know more, and therefore, they end up questioning things more. It is this act that gives meaning to their identity and leaves them content.
Look at the path- breaking products that have been created in the past such as Printing Press, Telephone, Airplane, Computers, to name a few. All of them first existed as ideas in the minds of people who invented them. With hard- work, determination, effort, these ideas came alive and were turned into concrete form, for the benefit of humanity.
A man’s thoughts make up his entire being. He is known by the thoughts he keeps. Great people such as Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore exist today in our minds because of their thoughts, which are a reflection of their personality and which gives them identity. Therefore, thought precedes existence.
