IIM Calcutta, IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore were the first three IIMs to be established in India. The IIMs were formed with the sole intention of tapping and nurturing management talent and resources in India in the post-independence era. According to the Indian Institutes of Management Act 2017, the IIMs have been declared as institutes of national importance. Today there are 20 IIMs and are considered the most coveted in India and abroad.
